I think it's quite possible to balance the budget and begin the process of cutting the debt by 2013. As well as perhaps dropping it by as much as 10%. But half seems just entirely unlikely. Hopefully both parties and the president will commit wholly to accomplishing some positive gains here even if the goal itself is unreachable.

Of course it is possible the deficit could be eliminated tomorrow if the government so chose to do so. All the public sector unions would take to the streets demanding payouts of their mathematically unsustainable pensions. But the deficit certainly can be wiped out, just so long as the politicians are willing to actually make a stand instead for the good of everyone, not just for the advantage of one voting block over another.
