23" Acer LED or 24" Acer LCD?

Hi all,

Need an opinion from those that have used both 24" and 23" monitors. I am used to using a 25.5" monitor at home (ASUS), and a 24" Dell + 20" 4:3 Dell at work. I'm re-doing my home setup with a 3 monitor system, and am in debate between two monitors.

Acer V243H: 24", non-LED.
Acer S231HL: 23", LED, $20 cheaper per monitor

I have picked these two for a number of reasons:

  1. I can buy locally where I can return for even one dead pixel.
  2. Reviews state that neither have reverse ghosting issues (the 24" LED models do, unfortunately)
  3. They are within my budget

I'll be mounting them on a custom stand that sits in the middle of the room, so the back of the monitors will be visible. I really like the idea of the LED for weight and looks, but am worried that I'll really notice the 1" difference, even with 3 of them.

As a note, I use my home machine for work and play. I am not planning to get anything other than a TN panel, and I do not mind these are 1080 instead of 1200, since conversations always seem to drift that way. Just focused on aesthetics and 23" vs 24" size.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
B.

The 24-in LCD has a faster response time - 2 ms. The LED has a response time of 5 ms. (These are in their specs.) Both have the same resolution. The diagonal measurement difference is 1 inch. The LED uses less power and is lighter in weight, 7.4 lbs. vs. 11.78 lbs. Viewing angle is the same. Pixel pitch is tighter on the LED - .265 vs. .276.

With three, the cumulative width is about 5.91 inches. That seems like quite a bit. I have two Lenovo laptops. One LCD and one LED. The LED screen is much more uniform, i.e., even across the board.

The cost is about the same, but the LCD is a greater discount - could be better value. Total weight difference is about 13 lbs in favor of the LED. Personally, I would go with the LED mainly because of power and weight.

That's a really good point about the 5.9" width. I'm leaning towards the LED at this point, but have started to look at the ASUS VE248H, simply because when I compared a 24" and a 23" in the store, it was definitely a noticeable difference. Some people report ghosting on this model, but so many others say theirs are just fine.

Unfortunately, I can't find it locally, with my best option being Amazon.com. I HATE dead pixels, so I want to make sure the return policy from the place of purchase is good if I run into one.

[EDIT]
Uhg, and now it seems there's a VE249H that's out in some places. Seems like the same exact monitor but with a 5ms instead of 2ms response time. I wonder if that was to correct the overdrive ghosting issues. Unfortunately I can't find that one anywhere.

+1 not to mention there is a significant amount of heat on a LCD that size vs a LED.

I ended up agreeing, and picked up three of the ASUS VE248H.

They do have some minor reverse ghosting, but it's not bad, and turning off Overdrive fixes it.

Thanks,
