I whitched from 23.11 drivers that came with my card (Abit Siluro GF3Ti200) to 23.11 detonators and noticed quite big performance drops in the games I play most frequently (mostly racing games). At same time 3dmark gained some 150 extra points with new drivers.
Had almost same problem with my old card, Leadtek GF2MX, when playing EA's F1 2001. Although the game was quite new, released in fall 2001, it was playable with 6.50 detonators and original 6.48 Leadtek drivers. Anything newer like 12.41 or 21.83 made game to drop frames and even some details were missing. But again 3dmark results were much higher with newer drivers.
All this made me think that new detonators are released to improve 3dmark results and maybe add some fps to those games that are most commonly used for benchmarking, like Quake3.
