im about to buy a new monitor, ive narrowed it to the FP2141SB-BK 22-inch CRT and the dell 2001FP. Which one is better? Ive heard the 2001FP is actually good for gaming with its 16ms, but ive seen some ppl say it STILL comes with a bit ghosting, and no "true color" (like crts)....

prices arnt much of a problem since dell sells them both in the same price range. im a gamer, so i wanted to know which one was best for me. whichever monitor i buy will probably stay at home, or later on in a big apartment - so space is not a major issue - if anytihng just a convenience (i dont do lan parties either)

I would go with the CRT. I like to game and watch movies on my PC with the lights off in the room. I've heard that it's bad for your eyes to do that on an LCD, but it's not bad for your eyes if you're using a CRT. I can't verify this, but it's what I heard. If you game with the lights on it's prolly not a problem, but it's something to keep in mind.

For gaming your real advantaeg with a CRT is being able to do any resolution (I might add the CRT can do a higher resolution) without any loss of quality. Not to mention gorgeous colors. If space is no issue, a CRT is better.

Now that I have a great LCD I can't go back to CRT and I game.

CRT's fair much better with shades of blacks (grey scaling?) than LCD's.

LCD's = 0 flicker and sharp images. Very easy on the eyes in all ways.

If you're a gamer, the only choice is the CRT. I speak from experience; I'm using a 2001FP right now (not mine), and I used to have that exact 22" CRT you mentioned. Being able to do (for example) 1600x1200 @ 100+Hz is more helpful than you'd ever imagine in fast-paced games. The ghosting on the 2001FP renders me nearly unable to aim well, whereas I totally owned at a LAN party at which I was using the CRT.

I use a 17 inch Samsung 710T. No ghosting what so ever.

I own Synthd00d at every lan party too. He farts up a storm and constantly preaches about his gay CRT.

CRT hands down winner. LCD's only real pro's are space and weight savings and less eye strain.

Hey Zap what Sony CRT do you have? I have the G520 and HL2 looks pretty good on it but I haven't seen it on an LCD.

LCD's are still behind high end AG CRT's in almost every regard except possibly text. With LCD's you have to worry about dead pixels, stuck pixels, and possible backlight problems. None of those is an issue with the CRT. LCD's can't handle black's and dark scenes anywhere near as good as even low end CRT's. LCD's also don't perform as well if you run them out of their native resolution, although this is getting better. With a CRT, you can change resolutions at will to suit your situation without the loss in image quality. Finally, LCD's still can't reproduce color like even low end CRT's can.

The only real advantages to a LCD over a high end CRT is space and power savings.

I was recently in the market for a new 20"+ screeen, and I chose the NEC over the 2001FP and the 2005FPW, and I haven't regretted it a bit. Gaming @ 2048 x 1536 @ 85hz is sweet. ;)

Seems pretty simple to me. If space isn't an issue, get a CRT. Bulk and power consumption issues are almost the only reasons to go LCD (the other being if you're one of the rare people that has issues with a 80+Hz refresh).

If a game looks better on an LCD than on a CRT to you, the CRT is not of equal quality, or you are suffering from the placebo effect. Look, each to their own and all, and I actually use an LCD half of the time, but LCDs have (slightly) inferior picture reproduction to CRTs. This is a fact, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a fanboy. Naturally, anyone who tells you the difference is really big is also a fanboy.

For gaming I'll Nth the 22" NEC CRT it's pretty much the best afforadble screen money can buy for that purpose, the 2001FP is good but in just about all respects except text it can't compare to the 22" NEC AG monitor.

I got mine from Dell about 2 weeks before Christmas. They had a deal going with a 20% discount, and most importantly, free shipping. Basic ground shipping on this monitor will probably be at least $50...it's like a 78lb shipping weight. I ended up getting it for $550 shipped...same price I could have got a 2001FP or 2005FPW for.

I would get one quick as NEC is discontinuing all CRT's soon. They will still support existing ones, but they aren't making any more. Keep your eye on the hot deals forum, and check pricegrabber occasionally, and keep your eye out for free shipping deals.

I have the E540 Sony CRT. I want to sell the thing because I don't have the space to store it.

If space is not an issue than CRT is superior to LCDs. If however, you primarily use your monitor to view e-mails and read forums then an LCD are nice on the eyes. That being said, you did say that you were a gamer and CRTs are still the way to go. Too bad on Mitsubishi/NEC discontinuing CRT production.
