Just wanted to drop a post that Walmart has the Federal Value packs of .223 with 100 rounds for $39.95. This is their every day low price, but in searching for good prices on 5.56/.223 this is about the best I can find.

Most other ammo places (other than bulk sites which charge shipping or gun shows) sell anywhere form $9.50-22 for a box of 20 rounds.

Just saying, if ammo prices keep going up, it might be a good time to stock up on a few boxes of this stuff while you can get it @ .40 a round. I've had a few people tell me these are ok to reload too...but they're definitely not top brass.

good find but here in Iowa City Wally world has been out of 9mm 45 223 and other common calibers for months now so YMMV and I know its hard to find in the Chicagoland Walmarts too.

Prices are quite high right now but kit wise i have seen some posting on FW forums under the hot deals sports and outdoors sections but those seem to be sold out as of yesterday or so. You can also build your own and there is at least one site that appears to be pretty helpful for that I can PM you with that if you wanted it.

Got the AR-15T for 1599, the S&W page lists it north of 1880. It was a modest discount. Cant wait to try it out.

Agreed on the ammo supplies being low. I have a 9mm and a .22 handgun....I've got plenty of 9mm for now, but have had to get CCI ammo for the .22 because they've been out of the $15 value packs at Walmart.

I've been stocking up when I can. The trick is to find a Walmart and keep going back when you can. They tend to get trucks in at night and usually stock the ammo around 9am since they have to put stickers on all the boxes that come in....

AR-15's are going to be expensive. Most Bushmaster rifles are around $1100 right now and you can get others for more. If you want to save money, I recommend going to Gunbroker.com and buying a stripped lower or fully assembled lower....then try to buy an upper or upper assembly somewhere. It ends up taking more time, but can save you $250 or more if you get good deals. Stripped lowers are going for $130-300 with the average price at around $175 right now....so $200 for one you want is acceptable if it's a Rock River Arms, LAR Grizzly, BushMaster, or even S&W stripped lower. You just have to have them shipped to an FFL in your area and pay the fees associated with that. (background check & transfer)

You can pickup a rifle kit with a non-chromed barrel frrom del-ton.com for $485+shipping~$505. Just keep in mind that it's entry-level and may require extra cleaning and care. It might be more fun though since you'll have everything you need except the lower and these orders don't require and FFL.

If you don't want the headaches, go ahead and buy an assembled rifle...you'll likely get a decent case and a few accesories with it...plus a warranty.

I found myself stifling laughter as I looked at this thread...and I hesitate to say this, so please don't kill me...but why the f*ck do you need all this ammo?:p
edit: corrected phrasing. and to add: if you're a crazy sniper, please don't shoot me:)

Apparently you've never been shooting right?

I can easily use 500 to 1000 rounds on a trip shooting with my friends.

The same reason people need:

any power supply more than 150 watts
any video card that's not the integrated mobo one
any cpu beyond the cheapest $25 celeron
any ram above 64MB
any case that's not 6 sides of sheetmetal
any car that's not a Chevy Aveo

And that's just going down the list of forums at Anandtech.

Good deal if you can find it. My local Wallys are stripped bare of nearly all ammo. Thankfully due to public outcry, the DOD has has rescinded its prior directive that all small arms spent casings be mutilated rather than recycled. If this had been a permanent ban bulk supplies would have dried up very quickly.

The govt is def going after the ammo this time around
The ammunition accountability laws being proposed around the country piecemeal is an endrun around a frontal Federal action.
ALL ammo must have laser etched bullet/casing and cartridge box unique identifier, and thumbprint at time of purchase
ALL non coded ammo at a certain point in 2011 must be destroyed, and possession of same will be a felony, one or 1000

I'm not naive about the far left's agenda; But to my knowledge, never has a federal gun or ammo law been passed that didn't include a Grandfather clause. That's why full auto weapons are still legal in some 30 states - as long as they where manufactured (the receiver OR the auto sear) before 1986. All other parts to the machine gun can be legally rebuilt/replaced an unlimited amount of times - including the M2 Browning belt feed .50 cal machine gun :)

Good sources to check for online ammo. Most only require a drivers license photocopy to verify you're over 18, and will ship UPS/Fedex ground.

http://www.wideners.com/
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/

That last one is where I picked up 1000 rounds of .223 Wolf steel casing target shooting ammo for ~$300, shipped. That was back in November time frame, so not sure if that price is still viable or not. Definitely cheaper than Federal, but good for going out and shooting for fun. Came in two cases of 500 rounds, which (each one) contained 25 boxes of 20 rounds, so it's easy to break down (versus just getting a sealed can). That price also included a year's worth of their Buyer's Club, which gives a (I think) 10% discount off normal price, plus free or discounted shipping. At the time I was buying, they were one of the few places online that actually had .223 ammo available for sale.

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks for that aimsurplus link, 2,000+ rounds of Soviet 5.45x39mm for $326.15 is a hell of a deal, especially for the Russian made stuff.

Widener's reloading supplies often has really good deals (for these times, anyway) on PRVI Partisan M855 and M193. $80/200rds for M855, I recently bought 400rds but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Very good reviews, M855 is great if you have 1:7 twist rate.

I never knew ammo cost so much. I have a friend who is a gun nut and is always poor even though he makes 80k a year. No wonder why.

these prices are new, from just 6mos ago or so. maybe a 50% increase in some instances. but now, you have the perfect storm for ammo hording - dems major control, obama, holder, emanuel, etc

sadly, now even a lot of the reloading components are spoken for so you can buy a press but no powder, primers, bullets, just clean your old brass....

you are forgetting about the 3mos+ wait......

also, why would a del-ton kit require more cleaning/care than any other rifle? they all basically use the same uppers, barrels, bcgs, etc. it is not like every company that sells them makes their own parts, much like say video cards - usually the same w/ the exception of a sticker, same w/ AR parts to a high degree.

get a del-ton kit, put in a lmt bcg and it will run w/ any of them....

I think he was saying the non-chrome lined barrel might require more care than a higher priced chrome lined one.
