I'm still looking for a great LCD. I've got many suggestions for both 22" and 24". But re-reading an earlier topic, i came across a post i missed talking about the native resolutions.

I'm not familiar with widescreen LCD's and their resolutions, and what looks good since i've never actually seen them.

My only experience is with my 17" widescreen dell xps laptop which goes up to 1900x1200. (or something very similiar.. correct me if i'm wrong)

My last desktop LCD was a standard Samsung 8ms 19" from like.. 4 years back.

But anyways, the post stated how most 22"s are cap'd at a significantly lower resolution than the 24"s.

Is this true? and does it make it a bad investment to buy a 22" if i'm looking for a solid resolution for gaming? I dont want to have to enable 4xAA on every game because the max resolution is crap, but the colors are great.

Thanks!

20-22" LCDs generally use a resolution of 1680x1050. Some 19" ones also use this resolution. Some like the larger size of the 22" models, but they don't give you any more pixels than the cheaper 20" ones.

24" LCDs use 1920x1200.

There are also 21.5" LCDs now that do 1920x1080. Those are worth a look especially if you like the tiny pixels on your Dell.

I just recently got a 24 and I love it, it IMO really is the perfect size for a desktop monitor, my 22s were nice but could not compare to this beast.

Indeed most 22" LCDs run at 1680x1050 while most 24" LCDs run at 1920x1200. 1920x1200 is obviously the better resolution. The thing to keep in mind is that it does not matter what LCD you buy, if you don't run at the native resolution, it will look like total trash. It will take more expensive graphics hardware to continue to be able to run games at 1920x1200 than it will at 1680x1050.

This is my first choice for a 22" LCD:

I'm clearly an LG fan, but pretty much anyone who has used an LG is :) I wasn't aware of just how far that 24" model came down in price, it's a very good deal to me.

If you have the power to run a 24" then by all means get the 24". Otherwise, if you don't have a fast enough video card and you don't feel like upgrading go with the 22".

I've owned a 20" widescreen 1680x1050 panel since 2004. So I was one of the early guys. 1680 is the perfect res, but I think you'll find yourself wanting just a LITTLE more space on your desktop. 2 1680 panels fixes this.. but I'm going with a single 24" this time. For multiple windows open 1680 is just not enough for me at times. For gaming 1680 is perfect (unless you play MMORPGs like Eve Online ect then you'll want 1920).

There's no real choice on LCDs if you value quality.. go with the 22" e-IPS LG (dell 22"). Or the HP 24" H-IPS panel.
My 20" is the 2005FPW (S-IPS). It's all about getting an IPS panel. I'm telling you to and hoping you ignore any other advice. :)

With my rig (see my sig) I can run all games 1920x1200 with my Dell 2408WFP with most detail turned highest setting then depending on the game how much Aniscopic and Antialiasing is applied.

Go big or go home. The monitor is the part of your computer you sit and look at everyday, it's beyond me why some people skimp on it. If your system can't handle the resolution, upgrade that too and help stimulate the economy :)
1920 x 1200 (or 1080) ftw.

Looking for a 24", and going back and forth between that dell and the BenQ G2400WD...I was wondering, how much input lag do you notice with that Dell? Do you play fps multi with it w/out issues?

I have the older Dell 24" 2405FPW, and quickly got used to gaming on it. I think there is some lag compared to a CRT (I hear CRTs are still the preferred way to go for the hardcore gamers over in Korea), but as long as you have a graphics card able to push the pixels, I doubt you'll notice much difference.

In general, I'd always suggest going for the bigger and higher resolution if you can afford to do so. There's little point in owning the most bad ass graphics card if you don't have a monitor to really flaunt it.

I have d/l every good new game out there for last 2 years with this system but generally after doing my setup for max settings and looking at the new pretty graphics not played them much :). I have played most MMORPGS - WoW, Everquest 2, Age of Conan, LOTRO and had no performance issues but of course lag issues. I have not any lag or minimal at worst. Heres the review link agian if you missed. Also the Dell is a great computer, movie, and HDTV monitor, with 8 different imputs - 1 VGA - 2 DVI - HDMI - Component - Display Port - S-Video - Composite - so you can hook up all kind of added devices..................
p.s Almost forgot the ability to rotate the monitor which make single page viewing of pdf file sweet as the text is readable in that mode.
Here the review link

22" is very commonly TN panels.

24" are much more widely available with the superior panel types (basically everything that isn't TN).

That said, I have a 22" TN, and it does the job fine for me.

lolwut?

That's a very good AS-IPS panel monitor, but the resolution (1680x1050), and size (20.1") leave a bit to be desired depending on what you're doing.

A good 24" with 1900x1200 like the LP2475 (IPS panel) will look miles better, particularly for native HD content. Displayport and HDCP are nice to have as well.

A nice choice would be the Dell 22" eIPS over in HotDeals. High enough res (IMHO) but not too high to make graphics card expenditure crazy.

I would think that would depend a lot on what you use your computer for. If you have a weaker graphics card and love to game, then 22" is a better choice unless you can spend the money to upgrade your graphics. If you like to watch movies or need to look at a lot of graphics then 24" would be better.....or if you have a graphics card that can handle 1920X1200 and like to game.
