I just got a viewsonic vp171b 17" lcd. It looks real nice but I am starting to wonder............ Should I send it back and get the 22" NEC FP2141SB crt? The thing is that both are about the same price. The lcd looks real nice but I wonder if for gaming if I would like the larger monitor. I would think the text would be real good on it since I could run it at 1600x1200 @ 100hz refresh rate. What are your opinions on this?

Depends on what you want to do. From all the reviews I've read, color rendition on 16ms LCDs sucks badly, so if you do any kind of photo or video work, you'll definitely want a CRT. If all you do is gaming and text-based stuff, and you don't care about how your colors look or how uniform your monitor's brightness is, then the DVI-connected LCD is by far the best for you (not to mention that it's much easier to move around if necessary).

I had a 19" Dell 1901fp lcd but I just sent it back because of ghosting issues. The response time was 25ms as is all other 19" lcd monitors. There are none in the U.S. that I am currently aware of that are 19" and faster. I never move the monitor because I do not need to. Do you guys think the lcd I have will look better than a the crt I described?

Hmmm. Let's see:
17" or 21" of screen real estate for gaming....this is hard.....errrrr......aaahhhh....damn, what's with these stumpers lately?!......

Oh yeah. I forgot that 25% more screen real estate is ALWAYS preferable, unless perhaps you have to move it a lot. If you're a gamer, I don't think this is even a choice?

if you're into gaming and don't move often, then get the crt for sure. i love my 19" kds avitron, but i'm moving 3 times this year....and after the 1st move a week ago, i already placed an order for an lcd to save my back (carrying it up and down stairs nearly killed me. ;)). i actually ordered the 1901, but i'm not looking forward to the ghosting. but i don't game a whole lot anymore, so hopefully it'll be tolerable.

CRT without a doubt. Personally I think LCD's are alot of stupid hype, but I don't move my monitor often. I have a crappy little 15inch I can take to LAN parties or whatever..

anyway, if you are constantly moving your computer and/or dont have any space you might as well get a laptop anyway.

I agree with going with the crt. The crt will be with you almost forever the lcd will likely blow a bulb and then your paying out of your booty for another bulb and install. It really becomes not worth having ever bought a lcd after that. And if your wondering what it would be like playing on the bigger screen ask yourself this. Would you rather play an xbox on a 31" hdtv or a 61" bigscreen tv?
Same thing with playing your games on a 17" lcd or a 21" flat crt stuck right in your face. You will love the extra size.

You need a lot of desk space for a crt that big!!!

I'd rather buy a bigger desk than go back to a 17" screen. Blech. It's just not immersive if the game is looking like a Gameboy in front of you.

I'd definitely go for the 22 " CRT, no question about it. That thing should be able to run 2048 x 1536 at a decent refresh rate and it'll look great in games and give you heaps of screen space as well.

If you have the desktop space and don't mind the weight, then CRT definately. Personally I would go for an inexpensive analog LCD now, then wait for price to come down more next year on a larger DVI one and go for dual monitors.

CRT without a doubt, how can you go back to a 17" LCD when 22" is just going to be bloody amazing. I personally feel LCD's are crap for things like gaming and provide far lower performance than CRT's. Buy an LCD only if you desperately need the space, dont game and don't mind sacrificing visual quality. :D:beer:

Yeah - if you move around a lot, get a laptop with a good Radeon 9000, or whatever the best mobile graphics thing is these days, a Thrustmaster Tacticalboard (or a Belkin Speedpad n50; it's smaller - laptop keyboards just don't cut it for gaming), some good headphones, and a good mouse, and you're set for mobile gaming.
Or just work out for several months so that moving a huge CRT around is easy.:p

Gaming, you gotta have 19+, it's a world of difference over 17 I find (I have a cheap 3 year old 19inch CRT but it works). 22 would be just awesome but a real pain to move.

What is this "hard to move" criteria anyway?
How often do you move a monitor if you're most people?
If you're in college and move every 3 months, think about portability. If you're living places years at a time, I think the answer to this is really obvious.

A good quality LCD is much more hassle free than a CRT but the benefits of such huge CRT are a completely different ball park from a good 17" LCD. Really the only thing these monitors have in common is their price. Obviously you need a monitor and because you're looking and don't really know whether you want a huge CRT or an average LCD I'm thinking that you've never really considered what you might want the monitor for. CRTs are yesterday's solution, while LCDs can still be considered today's and tomorrows solution because they have yet to be "perfected" as they aren't as flexible as CRTs and are far more expensive. One thing I have learned from this is that I feel a good LCD can be fairly hassle free, you plug it in, set it to its native resolution and you're set and perfect. Only "hardcore diehards" will swear solely by another solution like some of these crazy dudes in here, and because you're asking in the first place I'm going to assume you aren't as crazy.

IMHO LCDs of today are acceptable for your average range of tasks, and considering their advantages they certainly are going to be the future of computer displays, whether or not you want to invest in such relatively young and quickly developing technology is up to you, you'll see some of the downsides of these "earlier" models but you'll get all the advantages CRTs cannot boast.

On the other hand you've got a CRT solution, certainly seems like a relic at first glance but the technology certainly is mature and the dissadvantages will most likely be overshadowed by the other feats it will easily shine very brightly in. Vast desktop space, crisp and high resolution support, fast refresh rates in the higher resolutions as well... But nearly all 19"+ CRTs are unacceptably too big for your average desk space, if you can find a good place to stash a huge CRT and keep it there then you should be set for quite some time (a good 5 years I'd think, I've got a nice 19"er that's 6 years and still very very good)

From your intial post you seem to be satisfied with how the LCD is working out for you, and considering your rig I don't know if you'll need to go any higher than 1280x1024 for gaming unless you plan to play some older games and grab youself a newer card to run the resolutions a 22" CRT could provide a significant difference for you over the LCD. And as far as text the LCD should work really good unless you want more space for the text. I dunno, unless you are unhappy with the LCD I'd say keep it and get used to what we'll all be eventually using... :p

I think the "hardcore diehards" have just seen the difference between looking at 17" measly little inches and 21" beautiful inches. As I type this, my face is about 15" from my 20" viewable CRT, it pretty much fills my field of vision.
If I had a 17" viewable LCD, it would look like a little cash register monitor in front of me. I can run higher resolutions, or lower if need be for higher AA/AF settings, and never think about it.
I've yet to see ghosting on my CRT.

To me, this question is analogous to: Should I get the 9800 Pro for gaming, or go with the Parhelia?
The Parhelia may have some neat features, but you lose so much more.....

I would never buy a monitor smaller than a 19" lcd now, so I would get the 22" crt, right now I have a 20" monitor at home and just ordered a 19" lcd

I had a 19" crt that I was very happy with. Unfortunately it died after years of service. I originally got a 19" lcd but the ghosting was an issue in games. Otherwise it looked great. Now I have this 17" lcd that looks good in games. I am just tempted with the option to get a larger screen for about $60 more. I know lcds are supposed to be easier on your eyes but the text is so small at 1280x1025 that it might become an issue. The colors and the sharpness is very good.

I'd go with the CRT. I'm still not impressed with the LCD's and especially not at the cost!

I love my 21" CRT. I agree it is a pain to move (so I just don't).... and they are absolutely amazing for gaming and movies.
