I have calcium based stones.

Doctor repeatedly recommends more water. Since I am up to 6 stones I now drink a gallon a day.
She also recommended I slightly increase my calcium intake, the logic being my kidneys will process it better if I have more.
Starving yourself of calcium doesnt work, cuz your body just strips it from your bones.

Also there was a long list of shit I cant have, most of it was exotic stuff that I never eat anyway. But a few common things included, peanuts, cashews, almonds, cranberries, and cranberry juice.
An increase in green vegetables was recommended but thats just generic advice for almost any problem.

Well, went back to the ER. They did a scan and found a 5cm stone in my kidney that needs removed. I go in tomorrow to find out what that entails.
Good god...
No words for that; hopefully they can get that out of there without it literally tearing you a new one.

Sucks that they aren't valued like pearls, or you'd be able to pay the doctor's bill right away.

I've had kidney stones for over 25 years now. It's supposed to be a young man's disease but I am still cursed. It is painful beyond anything you have experienced.
Thankfully I haven't had one in two years. I have lost count of how many stones I have passed and have had lithotripsy 5 times. All of the tests done to determine the cause came up normal. My brother and sisters have all had stones, we're just cursed.

I drink tons of water and don't eat chocolate, nuts or most green vegetables. Most people have calcium oxalate stones, so you want to reduce your oxalate intake. I am also on a low-protein and low-salt diet to help prevent them.
As for lithotripsy, it is not a cure all. The pain of the procedure is really bad, a couple of times they gave me fentanyl, which is something like 20 times stronger than heroin. The lithotripsy just breaks the stone into many little stones, which all have to pass...
I've got a book called "No More Kidney Stones" by John Wiley and Sons publishers that has a lot of good information (and horror stories) about preventing kidney stones.
Here are my hints to surviving:
Drink lots of water and lemon flavored water. Drinking beer and lemonade are correlated with fewer stones. Drink more water when it is hot and humid.
Lose weight, fat people get more stones.
Don't eat chocolate or nuts before bed, drink a glass of water instead before bed.
Don't eat too much protein, the breakdown products promote stone formation.
Don't eat too much salt, it dries you out which leads to stones.

And my #1 hint, if afflicted with a stone, which may start with back pain, take a percocet or dilaudid or two before going to the emergency room, because it may be hours before you are seen or given anything to help with the pain. You don't want to be writhing in pain for two hours in the emergency room with no pain meds (been there, done that).
I wouldn't wish kidney stones on my worst enemy.

They knocked me out totally for lithotripsy, so zero pain. It's funny how different Doctors do things differently. Your doctor might be a great doctor, but I think I'd find one that knocks out a patient before that procedure. Also, they pulverized my stones down to nothing more than grains of sand.

I'm a little worried seeing nuts listed as causes? What? Why? How?

I'd like to say its the protein but the problem is other protein sources are on the OK list.
And some of the things on the No list are exotic and dont have protein.

It's the oxalate content which is bad, if you get the most common type of stones-calcium oxalate. Nuts and chocolate and spinach are about the highest in oxalate content.
I could eat 2lbs of cashews in about two days. Just say no. If you do indulge, drink a couple of glasses of water after, dilution ftw. I hear that sunflower seeds have about the lowest oxalate content of nuts and seeds.

All these stories sound fucking horrible. Thankfully I haven't had the pleasure of having one. I drink a ton of water and eat sort of healthy so that's probably why.

My dad has had several kidney stones throughout his life. I would say about 20/25 so far.

The only times I have ever seen my dad cry is when his mom died, when he was drilling into a wall and the bit broke in half and he drilled his finger straight though with a broken drill bit, and when he passed a kidney stone.

Every since I first saw him I have chugged water like a camel. I'm 32 and have not had one so far, so I hope it stays that way.

I went through it around Christmas. Passed one and had another removed through surgery. Pissed razors for the 36 hours after surgery. Had the stent in for about a week, almost killed doctor when he failed to mention I could have it removed under anesthesia versus the numbing gel and horribly long scope he shoved in me. Worst part is all tests came back negative so there isn't anything a I can do to avoid it in the future.

Rise from the dead horrible kidney pain.

Apparently I learned nothing. Just got back from the doctor. Two 6mm stones in the right kidney. CT Scan scheduled to verify.....sigh....

Doesn't your doctor know there are treatments to prevent stones?

Go see a Nephrologist. I take two little pills a day, haven't had a stone in 21 years.

Was in the ER one night and lady laying in the next bed groaning like a real bad porno scene for awhile. Turns out she had stones and only calmed down after a couple morphijne injections. When they tried to discharge her she got all worried and agitated that they weren't going to give her any mecidicine from the hospital and said why can't you just give me a couple of those shots to take home.

Had one back in 08, passed it, so it was pretty definitive.

Thought I was having one last fall. Went on week long camping trip even, it had been building for a couple weeks, by the drive back (around 600 miles over two days) it was pretty tough. Finally went to the ER as things were getting bad and I was hoping they could check it out and sound blast it or something. (Had been guzzling water and grape-cranberry juice by the gallons, but no effect this time.)

Nope. Muscle spasm or something. Had a couple shots in the hospital (whoooo boy!), got some muscle relaxants and strong painkillers, and all done. Weird.

Doctors. What do they know? :p

Also, if you have the right kind of kidney stones, cranberry juice can help. I like the grape-cran, because I can't drink that stuff straight. FYI.

Anytime I've felt something like it coming on again since 08 I guzzle that stuff down for a couple of weeks.
