I've had kidney stones for over 25 years now. It's supposed to be a young man's disease but I am still cursed. It is painful beyond anything you have experienced.
Thankfully I haven't had one in two years. I have lost count of how many stones I have passed and have had lithotripsy 5 times. All of the tests done to determine the cause came up normal. My brother and sisters have all had stones, we're just cursed.
I drink tons of water and don't eat chocolate, nuts or most green vegetables. Most people have calcium oxalate stones, so you want to reduce your oxalate intake. I am also on a low-protein and low-salt diet to help prevent them.
As for lithotripsy, it is not a cure all. The pain of the procedure is really bad, a couple of times they gave me fentanyl, which is something like 20 times stronger than heroin. The lithotripsy just breaks the stone into many little stones, which all have to pass...
I've got a book called "No More Kidney Stones" by John Wiley and Sons publishers that has a lot of good information (and horror stories) about preventing kidney stones.
Here are my hints to surviving:
Drink lots of water and lemon flavored water. Drinking beer and lemonade are correlated with fewer stones. Drink more water when it is hot and humid.
Lose weight, fat people get more stones.
Don't eat chocolate or nuts before bed, drink a glass of water instead before bed.
Don't eat too much protein, the breakdown products promote stone formation.
Don't eat too much salt, it dries you out which leads to stones.
And my #1 hint, if afflicted with a stone, which may start with back pain, take a percocet or dilaudid or two before going to the emergency room, because it may be hours before you are seen or given anything to help with the pain. You don't want to be writhing in pain for two hours in the emergency room with no pain meds (been there, done that).
I wouldn't wish kidney stones on my worst enemy.
