Q9650 is as fast are you can go on S775 IIRC. not worth it.
sorry, found out there is a qx9770/9775 but it requires 1600FSB.

Get a SSD if you wanna spend money on your comp.
A faster CPU won't help you get better frame rates on a graphically intensive game. The SSD wouldn't either, but at least you'd see a much more noticeable performance gain on other computing uses.

With that setup you should be able to get playable frames in BC2 assuming you have 1080p resolution.

Another thing, GTX460 is crap. You should have gotten Radeon 5770 / 5850 instead

Ehh? 460 kicks ass compared to the 5770 and is almost as good as a 5850 for about $100 less. It is priced rather fairly for it's performance and all and all is the second best Performance per $ GPU on the market for modern cards.

Try overclocking CPU and GPU. 3.5ghz is easily doable with q9400 although your p43 chipset may limit your fsb oc to a result of ~3.2ghz.

Uhhh....the GTX460 owns all other mid-range cards. I think the 5850 has a 10-13 frame difference from a GTX460, but you should still destroy the frames at 1080p.

A quad-core at 3ghz is still pretty damn fast. Hell, I know people still gaming on Wolfdale/Conroe 😀.

are you sure its your cpu? at 1680x1050, I'm surprised that you have issues...might be something else (I can't access the benchmarks at the moment).

Does your PC fall in line with what benchmarks say you should be getting around at 1680x1050? If the difference for a similar setup is >15-20% or so, I'd bet there is something else at play

why bother, frys combos on new i5 or i3 or amd x4 type stuff is so cheap and comes with a mb. unless u need an sli type mb or a lot of pci-e slots there is no reason to hang onto old sockets at this point.

BC2 = Bad Company 2? It's not in the CPU bench, but it doesn't seem right that a 3GHz C2Q isn't playable with a 460 1GB. What kind of FPS are you getting?

It's rather unlikely your Q9400 is holding you back. Even today, it's still a fast processor. Bump up the clockspeed if you still think it's the culprit.

Assuming you decide to upgrade anyways, getting an AMD processor is not an upgrade over your C2Q.

How about upgrading the Mobo and PSU to put in another GTX 460?
