2100+ Palmino NOW or 2200+ Thoroughbred Next week

I have ordered everything for my new set up except for the processor. I am still deciding whether to go with a Palmino 2100+ or wait for the Thorougbred next week and pay the price premimium. This would be a no-brainer except that I plan to unlock my CPU, drop the multiplier and run it at a 166 mHZ bus. Two questions-

1. When a multiplier is locked can it be lowered or is it locked to a specific number

2. Is unlocking a Palmino difficult and risky in such a way that it is worth waiting for the Thunderbird like Thoroughbred next week and pay the extra cash? Thanks

Wait and see what the retail T-breds look like...In reviews the oem chips appear to be simple unlocks like the tbirds. So that may be a bonus...Is it worth the premium??? I don't...What is the expected price???

Either way I think a 2100+ .18micron is likley not going to oc too much probably past 2200+ at air cooling. A 2200+ may be a crap shoot to see if you get one that will let you run it up to 2ghz like a very few reviews...

If you are only interested in leaving it at default clock but change multiplier to gain 166fsb then go with the 2200+ unless it is like 50 dollars more then the 2100+...66mhz ain't worth it.

I paid 136 dollars for a 1.6a northwood and I run at 2.66ghz...NOw that is value for my money. A 2.533 ghz p4 running at a slower 533fsb cost over 500 dollars....

the 2200+ is built on .13 micron so it will have lower power requirements and should run cooler so it should be a better option than the 2100+. the 2200+ is now showing up on pricewatch in the $240 range for retail including shipping

What about my 1st question, when a multiplier is locked do I have to unlock to lower it or only to raise it? Any more opinions on the thorougbred, I want to order tommorow if the Palmino is a better deal (Again, running at a 166 mHZ bus is a must, I have to help AMD beat Intel)
Thanks-

2200+ = 1.8GHz (133fsb x 13.5 multiplier)

If you raise the chip to a 166fsb (2.2-ish GHz) then you will have no chance of posting. 😱

They were in and out of stock 2 times at Newegg today for $240.00. From the picture that was linked there, and on review sites, it seems that joining the bridges with conductive ink or Loctite rear window defogger repair kit conductive paint will do the trick. 🙂

You could always lower the multiplyer and up the fsb if you unlock and then it just might work. I did see the 2200+ Tbred go to 2.1ghz from 1.8ghz the other day but they all seem to be a "lucky" pick right now for any amount of overclocking.

If you buy the 2200+, buy it cause it's .13 and cooler than the other chips, not cause it's going to beat Intel at overclocking right now. From what I saw you still have to fill in the L1's and then close the gaps so it's like the XP when unlocking the chip.
