1st roundup of the year! 21 heatsinks compared:

New heatsinks tested:

# AMD?s new Heat pipe Stock cooling
# Thermalright HR-01
# Thermalright SI-120
# Thermaltake Big Typhoon

New heatsinks previously not tested inside a case:

# Scythe NCU-2000 *
# Scythe Ninja *
# Thermalright XP-90C *
# Thermalright XP-90 *

And heatsinks included for comparison which were already tested in the Sonata II:

# AMD Stock Cooling *
# Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 *
# Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro *
# Asus X-Mars *
# Coolermaster Susurro *
# Noctua NH-U 12 *
# Noctua NH-U 9 *
# Sharkoon Red Shock *
# Silverstone NT02 *
# Scythe Samurai Z *
# Scythe Shogun *
# Thermalright XP-120 *
# Zalman CNPS9500CU *

I tried to represent the results as best and easily readible as I could; as always suggestions are welcome; thanks for reading "in advance"

Cool, they're reviewing the stock AMD as well! I'll be interested to see how well it compares because it's been great for me.

Yeah mine kicks a**. I love it. Check the review, its like 2-3C higher than the SI-120 lol. A free heatsink cooling almost as well as a $40+ heatsink. Cant beat that. 🙂

Yeah, I was thinking about getting a SI-120 or Ninja, but I figured I'd try out the stock hs/f. I'm glad I did 😀.

2-3C is a big difference? Hardly. Its a decent difference, but so is the price.

Ya the reviewer has insanely high idle temps to begin with, probably due to running 1.7volts lol. The thing with the stock cooler, when it reaches certain degrees, it ramps up the fan speed. MY stock cooler, never goes above 44C at load, so the fan never speeds up. My fan is completely silent, or close enough to not care.

So that DBA isnt really accurate, unless your cpu runs that hot all the time.

Also, arnt you forgetting the $30-$40 price difference between the two? 😛 I would hope the $40-$50 SI-120 beats a FREE stock cooler. Wouldnt you agree? 🙂

This round up sucks. No offense, but why o why are you still using single cores for testing in this day and age? it is just silly.

where did you see idle temps? 🙂

@ianmills: what would be the exact difference when using a dual core CPU...

it's true that dual core CPU procude more heat; however the overclocked CPU I'm using really stresses these coolers; at 125+ Watt (1.7v vcore is really the key 😉) it has a thermal output equal to the highend dual core CPU's.

not if i get and extra 2-400mhz. 30-40 bucks is chump change, my last video card cost $600.

I must say very good real world reviewing jmke, have been stalling my cooler choice and needed to b sure, i'm now convinced to go Big Typhoon, although i still would love to see how the Blue Orb II compares against the heat pipe guns...review soon maybe just for curiositys sake 😉
How good are those temps when using the supplied duct on the Thermalright HR-01 !! ....what i didnt see were PWM temps? how is it affected when u remove their cooling souce.. 🙂

Touche!

Anyway. Next-gen CPUs are all going to be lower (in terms of power consumption) and therefore output less heat. If we're lucky, this'll mean that these reviews will be rather important in the long run 😉

Nice work.

From what I can see from the big graph on the last page, the AC Freezer 64 Pro is one of the best in the pack! Easy to install and $30 to boot!

Hello, in the passive tests I left out the PWM area to keep the CPU/NOISE chart clear, but forgot to mention them afterwards, I've now added them and you can find it in my update here, thanks Corsa!

the tests with the Supplied Duct of TR were done by a fellow reviewer who lives in the US (I live in .BE) on S775. I don't think that fan duct would have made in difference in my tests, as it is made to fit on the HR-01 when it is orientated correctly
