I am looking for a 21 inch monitor. What is a good monitor for under 600$ I am looking at the Sony E540 MULTISCAN FD TRINITRON. I have not seen the monitor in person but people claim they look great. I have seen the 19in Samsung SyncMaster 955DF 25mm which is great looking with better dot pitch. The Samsungs look nice , but so do the Sony's(17 and 19's). All you monitor experienced fellas please help out. What is the best for the buck and where are there some good hardware reviews /post sites?

A 19" that can't even do 1280x1024@85Hz can't be considered a bad ass. The 955DF is good for low budgets, and low budgets alone.

Don't forget to look at the NEC FE-1250+ .............. and compare ...................?

I'm using a Nokia 445PRO that I purchased from Costco ($399.) several months back ................ has a Sony Trinatron AG tube in it and it's just beautiful .......................... IMHO.

Go for Samsung dude. My school has Sony Trinitron and I can honestly tell you my friend's Samsung 19" looks so much better.

If I were you, I would buy a 19" instead of 21". 21" was just too big for me. When I played games, I had to keep looking left and right. hehe...

But yeah, Samsung is better.

Ditto. Here is a little known fact, that .20 horizontal dot pitch on the 955DF that gets everyone so excited is actually a variable dot pitch. The only hard evidence of this is that the NEC AccuSync 95F uses the same 19" dynaflat samsung tube as the 955df. Ask around in these forums and you can verify this:

Here is a link to the 95f specs:

http://www.necmitsubishi.com/products/home/product.cfm?productid=133&cfid=3560007&cftoken=29356524

"CRT 0.24-0.28mm variable dot pitch / 0.20-0.25mm horizontal"

Here is a link to the Samsung page that makes no mention of the variable dot pitch:

http://www.samsungmonitor.com/html/products/955df.htm

Kudos to NEC for telling the whole truth. I just think it is very sneaky of Samsung to do anything less than publicly volunteer this information, which as far as I can see they have not done. I purchased the 955DF and then returned it for numerous reasons. It is a decent monitor at a competitive price (as I'm sure the 95F is), no doubt of that. Just know that the specs provided by Samsung are at best misleading.

Sony. I own two Trinitrons (one Sony, and one Dell) and they are beautiful.

Sony is better and costs more, but Samsung is cheaper and almos as good as Sony. I would prefer Samsung. Trinitons have 2 lines on the screen as I remember.

....

Just get a 21" KDS monitor with a trinitron tube. All they are is a Sony rebadge as far as I can tell. And the price will not rape you.

However if you need the 'name' brand then, Yes. Without a doubt, get the Sony.

I have a Samsung 900IFT and I am extremely happy with it. My only complaint is the brightness doesn't go LOW enough.

I have an Hitachi CM823 21" Flat and it's shadow mask (not aperature grill). To me that's a key - I just can't stand the two thin lines running across my screen - it always bothers me with web surfing or word processing, where I have a large, light colored background.

You should try to check out any monitor you're thinking of purchasing and spend some time looking at it with various type of images. It's a big part of the price of a system, and the one that will matter the most. Plus, it'll no doubt outlive 2 or 3 systems.

I'd take Sony over Samsung anyday.

BTW - the 955DF isnt really a true flat panel.

NEC 95F is not using the same DynaFlat tube as 955DF. It is however using a variation of shadow mask flat similar to DynaFlat but not the same, that is why NEC is publishing variable pitch because the center and the sides are variable (similar to Flat AG Trinitron). 955DF does use unipitch at .20mm horizontal (or .24mm diagonal) across the board. So as far as I know, we are telling the truth and are not trying to mislead. DynaFlat technology is owned by Samsung by the way, just in case you are interested to know so most likely if there is another product that are using DynaFlat, then Samsung actually license out the product or the tubes are made by Samsung...

Helman@Samsung

PS: I won't try to say our monitors are better (cause you know how objective that would be :) ) but if you are looking for 21" that are compatible to Sony, then you may want to consider Samsung 1200NF or if you are a die-hard NEC fan then it would be MultiSync FP1370...

Samsung,

I am really need the one average 19" for gaming and the old ladies email, and then the 21" or 22" is for me (my main PC) ,mainly for gaming. I do not do any graphical work so I don't think I need the Pro line of any monitor. Just to fill you all in on my budget , I didn't even wanna spend over 600$ , so I believe either the 1200nf , or NEC fe1250 will do fine.

I was planning on the NEC 19" fe950 for 313$ but I have seen the 955df and even though it doesn't support high refresh, I won't hardly ever be gaming on it and it looks great. Now something about a 40$ rebate( is there a 40$ rebate??) added to the 220$ pricetag at buy.com makes me really wanna save some money and go with it. (buy 2 monitors at buy.com and get free shipping)

What aspects do you believe the 1200nf to be better than the closely spec'd NEC fe1250?

I'd recommend Sony simply because I got a 19" monitor of theirs and I'm sitting in front of it right now. The text is sharp and clear and the colours are nice and vibrant.

eno...

1200NF has better spec than FE1250 which is a 110Khz machine while 1200NF is 121Khz... NEC's FP1370 technically though is a better machine that both FE1250 and 1200NF so my recommendation for the 21" is that if you find FP1370 at the same price with 1200NF then get FP1370 but if the gap is more than $100 then go for 1200NF... If FE1250 is less than 1200NF by more then $50 then get FE1250 otherwise get 1200NF...

For the 19", it looks like 955DF is ideal but for step up then 900NF is good, 900IFT is also good and when 950p was available before it was discontinued, it rocked... Everybody I know liked it although it was not a flat screen... Whatever it is, just find yourself a deal cause there should be some out there... Also keep in consideration the UPS factor... You know how they handle heavy boxes... Make sure you buy from a place that you can easily return the products to without restocking charge, etc...
