Theres not much of a differance. Used Diamondtrons are usually in better condition since they're relatively newer (Trinitrons have been around forever). It's all chance.

I'm also running a 21" Sony CRT. It's a beast (*weight*), but it has an awesome picture!

Mit 2060u NF from http://www.azatek.com/ (site is down ATM).
I'd buy another or a later model NEC in a heart beat.

No native resolution for the win, plus refresh rates of 100+.
I think Samsung is working on some shallow CRTs.

EDIT: After reading reviews at resellerratings I withdraw my rec of Azatec. I guess they have forgotten customer service.

I really like NEC monitors, but my last NEC CRT I believe had a sony tube in it - could tell by the two faint horizontal lines about 1/3 and 2/3 down the screen (not really visible unless you looked for them). My friend had a 19" Mitsubishi and it also had a sony tube in it (same lines).

I've gone to LCD now and I'm never going back to CRT :)

Just don't get one from Azatek ;)

I was very happy with my 4-5 year old 19" NEC

I tried to get a 22" NEC through azatek, two RMAs, 8 months, and -$125 later, I said fvck it and I have three Dell 2007FPs now.

If you're getting a used one, make sure you get it somewhere that you can return it for free if there are issues with it.

I must have really been lucky. I've had this Mit 2060u NF for 3 years and it still runs as new. DoM 5/00.

If you get one that works, then you're in good shape with Azatek.

This was the biggest nightmare I've ever had to deal with for returning something though. My first one had major convergence problems and it took them several months to approve my RMA. I called them several times, we have 94 e-mails back and forth, I called NEC-Mitsubishi twice, etc.

Well, here's a fun excerpt from an e-mail I sent in May (one of the 94)

I want a pre-paid shipping label on this. The problem started within the 7 day trial period.

Even if you don't believe me, for the amount of time and grief I've been through trying to get a monitor from you guys the decent thing to do would be to not charge me for shipping back the monitor.

I placed an order in January
I get a confirmation on it but the shipping address is incorrect
I am told by support that it is being taken care of
The package is still shipping to the wrong address according to the shipping site
I ask again if the problem is taken care of
You guys say it will come to the correct address
It doesn't
I ask to have it resolved and get no response from you guys
I call the shipping company and have to change it myself after failed delivery to the wrong address

I get my first monitor which out of box has major quality issues
I attempt to correct the problem on my own
I complain about it and am told that monitors of that size have some issues inherant to them
I write several e-mails describing the problem and get no useful help
I try calibration software to get a decent picture
You tell me that the monitor is normal
I have to take pictures documenting and explaining the problem and then you finally believe me that the monitor is defective

I get an RMA approval but the label is incorrect
I have to get a new label to send back the monitor

I am told I can get a 2070 for $100 more
After the first monitor is returned, I am told that you don't have that one and I could get a different model that was the same (it's not)
I say I was promised the 2070 and that it was on reserve finally resulting in that one being shipped

My credit card is billed for $269 instead of $100 and I am not notified
I am also not notified of the shipping of the first monitor
I find the billing mistake and ask for it to be corrected

I get the 2070 and it looks pretty good after changing settings and geometry
I use it for several days (6) and it starts to have some problems with shaking but it's not major
After the immense effort it was in the first case to get a return, I don't want to go through it again so I wait, hoping it will get better
The problem gets much worse and I take a video documenting the problem knowing that I would need to give you that level of evidence for you to believe one of your customers
I quickly reply to a request for model information
I am told that my monitor is not capable of running at 1600x1200 @ 85hz by you
I request the NEC/Mit number so I can confirm this information
I call them and am told that I am right about the settings and you are wrong

I check the manual for the monitor, the manufacturer's site, and your own website, all which confirm that I am right
You continue to tell me that I am wrong on my settings
I change them to what you suggest and the problem does not stop

Based on the information given to me from NEC/Mit, the monitor is defective and the problem only occurs from time to time. There is something physically broken in the monitor which probably occured during shipping but did not become apparent until later.

I request a refund on the monitor since this problem could get worse
I am still told that it is my fault
The problem becomes worse and I request a refund
I am asked what is wrong with it - WHAT DO YOU THINK???????????
I am ignored for 9 DAYS
I call asking for a return label so I can get rid of it before Thursday when I'm moving
I am told I will get a shipping label quickly so I can send it back
The time when I could return it before moving comes and goes and I finally get approval when it is too late and when it does come, I find out you want ME TO PAY?

During this whole period you have questioned my assessment of the situation and been incredibly slow in replying to and resolving my problems. I have been treated very poorly and have had to take great effort to resolve these problems that are clearly caused by major hardware issues with your monitors.

You've sent me two defective monitors that have gone bad within the 7-day period. I want a pre-paid label to ship this one back. Feel free to do whatever you want to it once you have it back so I can get a refund. Hopefully you'll find the problem I have documented and are able to fix it. I have not mentioned the geometry issue until now, but that is another problem with it you should look into. If you move an image from the center of the screen to the top of the screen, you will see how in the last 1/2 inch, the image becomes greatly distorted vertically.

I keep getting messages saying that you're sticking with whoever told you that this monitor can't do 1600x1200 @ 85hz.
Every source I've found says that it can, but I'm willing to just give up and say you're right if it will get me my money back.
If I agree with you on that, then you MISADVERTISED the monitor's specs. If that is the case, shouldn't I still be entitled to return this monitor to you free of charge for a refund?

I finally got my refund a few days ago. I ended up paying for return shipping and they charged me a restocking fee.

They wouldn't even believe me that my monitor was defective after sending them some pictures of it I had to make a whole complilation of pictures. This finally got them to take the first monitor back.

They said my monitor was normal until that point.

So anyway... good luck nodoubt :p

I used to have a 21" sony G520. Had it for 6 years and worked great. just sold it to my housemate for 100 bucks. Only downside is CRTs take up a TON of space and weight a ton (mine was 76lbs i think).

Mine clocks in at a hefty 93lbs, but because of the picture quality, I'll gladly have no problem moving it around.
I don't take it to LAN's though, that's a little overkill :)

YOyo, that was a painful read. I did phone them once before ordering the Mit.

They have another outfit in Florida, the owners are Russian Nationals at the time
of my purchase 3 years ago.

Two years ago an outfit in San Jose had new NEC 2070s for $650+shipping.

Thanks for the info. I'll check thier resellerratings today, just for drill.

I definately think something changed over there for quality service. I had heard a lot of good things about them so I didn't hesitate to order from them. I should have rechecked their reseller ratings since the time I had checked earlier. They had been going downhill between the time I heard about them and when I ordered.

The "two faint horizontal lines" are wires used to support the aperture grille in the physical CRT. Trinitron CRT's use the wires as do NEC/Mitsubishi's Diamontron tubes. (Not all aperture grille CRT's use the wires though; some LG monitors do not.)

According to Dan's Data, Mitsubishi licensed the technology from Sony, and called it Diamondtron instead of Trinitron. AFAIK, NEC manufatured its own aperture grille CRT's.

Personally, I own a 19" Dell branded Trinitron and a 22" NEC Diamondtron, but I have no idea which would be preferable for photo editing.

I believe whichever one gamma corrects closer to 2.2

I've got a Dell rebranded Trinny 21" (P1130) and a Sony Trinny GDM-500PS, 21". I take it to LANs because I can't go back to a 17" (the next biggest I have)... although sometimes I have to. Bought my Dell off eBay in December '05, and it's been treating me well since - MFG date 2002. The Sony, my dad's idiot friend sold me for $25, which seems to be working fine, with minor problems (every so often it freaks out) - MFG date 2002. I'm proud of the bargain hunting, I got both monitors for about $160. I will have to buy a 2007FPW (or whatever takes its place next year) for college next year.

Wow, yoyo, thats a horror story. I guess I was in luck when i got my FE1250+ last year from Azatek. I think I would reconsider buying another one from them from now on. How is AccurateIT, though?

It's sad that they don't make these beasts anymore. I think the only way I would trust buying one would be if it was locally and I could take a look at it. Otherwise I guess LCD is the only safe way anymore, besides dead pixels.
