21.5GB locked away in my Content.IE5 directory and I can't delete it!

Here's my problem:

Today I did a quick check and found that I had only 3gb of space free on an 80gb partition that was installed fresh only a month ago. I did some checking to see what was taking up all the space and finally tracked it down to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and more specifically in the sub-directory \ONQDCJUB. The entire directory was filled with files that were all named as single character ASCI characters such as "v", "=", "-" and "w". None of them have an extension and there is duplicates of some of the files. It was these 286 files that was sucking up to 800mb each for a total of 21.5GB.

From the research I've done, these are the compiled archives of everything I've surfed over the past month. And I can't delete them. ACCESS DENIED

I've tried booting into another WinXP partition but I still got the old ACCESS DENIED problem. I've tried editing the files name/extension so that I can then delete it but each time I get an error "Invalid Filename".

I've also tried booting into DOS using a Win98se boot disk. After navigating to the directory (hard because DOS couldn't see the directories and I had to type them from memory) and trying to delete the files, I got an error "The file cannot be found". I've tried using RD but that won't work because the directory isn't empty and I can't use Deltree because that command isn't recognized for some reason.

So ya, I'm stuck with 21.5GB of crap and I can't seem to do anything about it. I need a program or maybe even another OS that I can use to just select and delete this damn directory.

Thanks so much guys, you're my only hope :(

Hah, yeah. IE keeps a super-hidden cache of apparently EVERYTHING you ever view in IE. Maybe try just deleting Content.IE5 itself. I can remember cleaning that problem up in win2k a few times, and don't remember having any problems (other than the fact that the directories are hidden).

edit: try firebird </spam> ;)

Have you tried opening up IE -> Tools Tab -> Internet Options - > Delete Files ?

Have you tried renaming the folder, rebooting, then deleting it?

If there are duplicate files, and you are having difficulty accessing them for deletion, etc, couldn't it be possible that something on the drive is corrupt? I've had this happen years ago when a drive was going bad on me.

I'm not saying your drive is dead, but maybe a disk repair utility could clean that up for you? It's worth a shot atleast, if nothing else works.

If you boot into safemode with command prompt only, you should be able to delete it... it worked for me anyway if IIRC.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm running XP so command prompt is right out. I can't touch the directories or files from Content.IE5 up. I'm gonna try that ownership link that was posted. I'll keep ya posted.

No workies. Seems the main problem I'm having is that the files are already named and formatted in an invalid way. Because of that, any operation I try on them in either DOS or Windows results in an error cause I geuss it can't tell itself what to do.

Anyone think that maybe Linux could help?

Why is command prompt out? Just reboot, hit F8 to get the little menu, and chose safe mode with command prompt, or command prompt only... I forget exactly what is says... just choose the one that sounds like it'll load the very minimum to get a picture on the screen :D

if you have win98 dual booted then you may be able to get access via a program called NTFSPro by booting into w98 and accessing via dos using the utility- that way the usual xp locking procedures are invalid- i regularly knock out my user.dats that way but i will admit ive never tried the content folders- if you deleted higher up the tree then I cant see why it wouldnt work.
