I need some recommendations for a very good CRT with the max viewable area available. (BTW are there any CRTs with 21 or 22'' viewable area out there?)
I need the highest refresh rates e.g. 1600x1200@100Hz and support for 2048x1536 at decent refresh rate too.
Money is not an issue but of course I don't want to pay just for a firm without getting something very good in reality. (e.g an EIZO that doesn't offer me nothing more than any other monitor)
What I mean is that I'm willing to pay some extra bucks if I find something superb out there.
So I would like to here your opinions. Thanks

The Nec/Mitsubishi 2070/2141 (same monitor) was one of the top models when I was shopping for a crt a year ago. I don't know if anything better has come out since then.

My mainstream Sony only does 85hz @ 1600x1200. No complaints.

I have also heard very good things about the diamondtron tubes...at stated above by CJP

LaCie Electron 22blue IV 22" Diamondtron NF
Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB 22" Diamondtron NF
Sony GDM-FW900 FD 24" FDTrinitron if you want a 22.5" viewable area.

Argueably the BEST 21 inch CRT ever made, my Sony F520. Max. PC's best CRT for 3+ yrs. Retail when I bought it was $1800, I paid $800 for a refurbished one from UBid in 2000 and I still love it. I did graphic design/photo editing as a hobby, I mostly game on it now. It's still the best monitor I have seen although I think they are being phased out.

Totoku is known to make the very best CRTs available, these are supposed to be 'medical grade' whatever that is supposed to mean.

I was looking at the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB but in one site they say that it's 16X12@109Hz and in another @85Hz. Which one is it?

100Hz, but you better have a Matrox board to push 16x12@100Hz if you want good 2D IQ- the big two don't cut it. 16x12@85 is the reccomended setting for the monitor, it handles up to 2048x1536@85Hz.

Looking at the specs, it looks like the same thing as the outdated Mitsubishi 2040U

Nothing beats the Sony C520

Thanks Ben I wasn't aware of that. So when I spend a lot of time in front of the screen what would be a better choice for my eyes? I mean using a higher refresh rate at 16x12 or even scaling down to 12x10 would be actually worse than using the recommended settings?

Depends on what you are doing. Even using 85Hz @16x12 most of the consumer parts aren't crisp enough for my tastes- although how good they are can varry a considerable amount(I'm running a BBA R9800Pro). I end up running 1280x960@100Hz for most general purpose useage and am quite pleased with the level of quality at that setting, if I'm working with image editing then I bump it up to 1600x1200 but have the refresh rate at 85Hz as 100Hz the quality is rather unbearable for detail work. This does change considerably based on the vid card you are using, I was contemplating getting a PCI Matrox board for my primary display for some time(my 2141SB-BK has dual video inputs on the monitor, no need to worry about a KVM switch degrading quality) and still haven't ruled it out although I'll likely wait and see what the next board I pick up has for 2D IQ first.

Money's not an issue? Look up "Barco Reference" monitors and it will quickly become one.
