20ms seek time for my 60GXP....wtf?

BD2003

Lifer
20ms seek time is pretty ridiculous, but its consistently shown to be that high using Winbench 99.

HD Tach doesnt work on NT unless you register. Sandra tells me 17ms. And it doesnt even come near the 30gb ATA/100 baseline that sandra has set up.

DMA is on because I've got 2% CPU util. Transfer rate is 40 something MB a sec.

Its hooked up to a promise Ultra 100 Controller, only drive on the entire card. ATA/66 cable. WinXP. 40GB 60GXP. IRQ isnt shared or anything.

WTF? Crappy benchmarks or crappy drive?

there is definitely a problem, i dont usually trust sandra, but thats pretty high, have you tried running it from your onboard controller .. it could be your drive, but i doubt it, something else must be going on.. try using Iometer its a much more accurate tool, also check the forums at storagereview.com .. here is Iometer, good luck ..

VIA SB, but remember, I'm not using that. And you call that crappy? Its about double mine!

Damn, no floppy...any way I can put that utility on a bootable CD?

You know what, I dont understand why is it so facking hard for these people at via to make a working IDE controller?

Installing a HD used to be the easiest part of configuring a computer, on my old Intel BX chipset. I enabled DMA, and DMA worked.

With this via sh*t, I have to install 4 in 1 drivers, and then it recognizes my drive as SCSI drives (wtf?), and then I have to enable DMA using some stupid utility that doesnt even tell me properly whether its working or not? Hell, its the reason I bought the IDE controller to begin with.

But its still recognized as a SCSI drive. Go figure. Thats how windows recognized it though. I cant seem to find any newer drivers for my Promise Ultra 100 controller.

What does the VIA IDE controller have anything to do with this? You said it was
hooked up to a Promise IDE controller.

Which is just as bad with a VIA-based mainboard. The PCI issues surrounding VIA chipsets are well documented.

I forgot to mention that my score is derived from using a Promise FT100TX2, 8KHA+, and raid 0 w/ twin 60GXP 40's. 🙁

If by well-documented you mean a couple of anecdotal stories posted on some BBS
by some wackos with a vendetta. 😀

I dont need anyone else to tell me theres problems with VIA chipsets. I've found these problems myself. And I've done everything by the book.

The simple fact is I've had zero problems with older intel chipsets. Soon as I went over to the AMD side of things, its one thing after another.

However, I'd appreciate help far more than silly arguments over whether or not problems with VIA chipsets exist.

Do I have a bad HD, or are these just funky benchmarks?

I take it thats that acoustic management thing?

Is it enabled or disabled by default? I've never touched the settings.

Hmmm HDtach says 24ms....seriously wtf?

Gonna buy a floppy tommorrow to see if its this AAM stuff, but I cant imagine it slowing it down THAT much.
