I've been looking for a rotary tool for a while now and my local costco just got an AllTrade variable speed (8-33k) rotary tool for $26. Comes with 206 accesories. Thought it would be good for some of the case modders out there. Item#907240.

Here's the kit from another website. Text

that's a great price. question would be...how much worse off would someone be with an alltrade vs. a dremel.

If you are considering this I would highly getting the dremel instead. You get what you pay for and this thing looks like a POS in my opinion.

The rotary tool itself probably sucks, but would the bits be worth it?

I'm probably going to pick up the Dremel accessory kit one of these days.

The Costco in my area has an Alltrade dremel-type accessory kit with 200+ pieces for 18.99 if I remember correctly. This is without the rotary tool.

Edit:
I think this is the one for sale at Costco at the 18.99 price.

never tried their rotary tool, but i do have some of their bits, they work pretty well with my dremel, for that price, i would get it just for the bits.

Rotary tools don't seem that high tech to me - I would be inclined to try this brand at this price, especially with Costco's customer satisfaction policy behind it. Thahks OP.

I'm thinking the same thing - get it and if the rotary too sucks ass, then don't return it still because of the bits. That's a good price if it comes with a good seleciton of bits.

I got a cheap rotary tool from Walmart for $14. RPMs may be a bit low, but it's done pretty much everything I ever asked it to do (except use this super thin bit that is too skinny for the collar).

Since they ran out of the Dremel kit, when I saw this, and the price it was a no brainer. If it dies, just take it back..

What makes dremel so good?

Imo:

strong motor, so it can continue to work amidst resistance
variable speed in a way that is extremely variable between its high/low range
smoothness and quality of motor, giving it good durability/lifespan.

I've never tried another brand rotary tool so I don't know how these issues compare, but off the top of my head I find these valuable. Of course if one compares a dremel cordless vs. another cordless there are some other issues as well, altho I've only used a corded one.
