I want a higher resolution monitor than my 1650x1050 22" Westinghouse. I saw this one offered at Dell for a decent enough price and noticed that the resolution is weirder than usual.

I have an ATi 4870 and am wondering what issues with gaming or general use I may encounter. Right now all I am playing is portal (yea I know) and some demos that I download from time to time.

This is the monitor I plan on getting.

Or, alternatively, I am open to any recommendations for any monitor UP TO $400 total if you guys think its worthless to get this type of monitor. I am not particular about getting a nice TN panel. I actually prefer them sometimes...

The only issue is that monitor has a weird resolution which games may not have the option of supporting. On a second note, why do monitors have all these weird resolutions nowadays?

Yeah. I am worried about scaling and whatnot. I really want a decent monitor this time around. This Westinghouse was nice, but it died really fast, but it only had a 1 year warranty. (It's about 3 months over...lol)

I am wondering whether or not the resolution will be available when (if) I get this monitor. Argh.

16:9 aspect ratio which 2048x1152 is. Currently displays in general are heading towards 16:9 being the standard display ratio, not sure if there are cost reasons associated with this or if it is due to consumer's wishes(16:9 tends to be better for viewing movies on).

I don't see that resolution being a problem. Most current games should work fine if they use D3DCAPS to retrieve video information when their graphics engines set up. As far as scaling goes, if a title doesn't support that resolution, pretty much any 16:9 resolution should scale up properly (1920x1080 for example) with minimal ugliness. Worst case scenario, make sure video card scaling is turned off as well as monitor scaling (if it's an option) and play with black borders at 1920x1080 or 1680x1050.
