Sadly, the econobox category is dead in the U.S. auto market and will never return. It's certainly sensible to develop and market a BEV equivalent of the Corolla for global sales, but it's not what we're dying for domestically.
Personally, I don't believe EVs are forever dead in the U.S. I agree that the "mid-market range" is where volume and profits are at, and if automakers want to survive the coming Chinese onslaught, they better have both ICE and EVs to sell to American and Euro consumers. The BEV retreat of Detroit and Honda certainly begs the question of which legacy firms are doomed to fail as Chinese exports flood the world.
