One of the Game's fantastic races and upsets happened last night in the men's 1500m final:

Can't wait for tomorrow's final in the women's 400m hurdles.

that, and the women's 3k steeple chase was totally bonkers. One of the best sportsing things I've ever seen. Last night was great fun for track events, and just super satisfying all around.

You're not talking about the men's 3k steeple chase? It was mind blowing. Rooks took silver, was a whisker from gold.

Watched the USA women beat Germany in the soccer semi today (Peacock replay), even though I knew the result (had seen the big plays). Hope to see the gold medal match against Brazil Saturday... LIVE!

When is USA women's soccer vs. Brazil? The gold medal match is scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 10.

No medals for USA in beach volleyball this Olympics. The last team alive, men's, was crushed today by Qatar. Qatar hires whoever they want who will play for them (gives them citizenship, or whatever they call that). I guess they're just filthy rich from oil. Anyway, I figure Qatar will win the gold in that event.

No, I'm talking about the women's 3k, from yesterday. I did not stutter. Men's, from today, was also good. Not nearly as good, though.

Esp. delicious because Norway's Ingebrigtsen "punched himself out" and fell off the podium.
Nothing against the guy tbh but he's a narcissist.

Both were good. The men's was far more exciting and mind blowing! I could see Yavi had it but the finish of the men's wasn't predictable and was nearly photo finish.

Winfred Yavi JUMPS FOR JOY after winning women's 3000m steeplechase gold | Paris Olympics

USA's Kenneth Rooks barely misses out on steeplechase gold to Soufiane El Bakkali | Paris Olympics

I see it the other way. Both were great. The women's was just more competitive. The loser American guy blew his load way too early and couldn't hang. Yavi waited and pounced. It was awesome. Also the 4th fastest, ever.

I think for me, I didn't know who to pull for, so I just went with "that really little one over there" and decided she should win. :D It made the whole thing super exciting in the end. The men, I never gave a fuck, once.

Also helps that the first night was super awesome: Men 1500, Women's 200, Men's 100, Women's steeplechase. All races were fantastic. For the Women's 200, I would have been fine if that lady from St Lucia won again, getting only the 2nd medal in history for her nation (also her 2nd from the 100m), but Gabby pulled it out and was amazing.

T&F has been fantastic. That WR in the pole vault, that guy's technique is phenomenal, been a pole vaulter since a little kid! Val Allman getting another gold in discus, Crouser still the best, Gabby's a terrific person. Figure Lyle's gonna double up, he's one of a kind, so demonstrative, never seen anyone like him. Rooks in the men's 3K Steeple wasn't expected to medal, him being 6" out of gold was a triumph. Yavi, I knew she'd win a couple laps from the end, her face told the story, and her form and youth. She ran beautifully, but it was exactly what I expected. The end of the men's 3K Steeple was unpredictable all the way through. Men's 10K was terrific. There's more thrills to come.

Lyles is clearly a prima donna and admits he wants to be a showman like Usain Bolt, who didn't have to try all that hard. If that's how you like your athletes, then you love NoVax DjoCovid and Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen. In the 100m final, Lyles went from telling Kishane Thompson that the Jamaican had barely won, to "America, I told you!" 🤣

There's no way you knew that Yavi would win with 2 laps to go. Even Yavi didn't know Yavi would win in the final stretch as they were tied going over the last obstacle.

200m men's final and women's 400m hurdles incoming!

Bolt didn't have to try all that hard? Bullshit.

If that's how you like your athletes???? Lyles is one of a kind. Hate him, if that's your bag.

Ingebrigtsen is a prick.

I have to wonder about you.

And yes, I figured Yavi to win with 2 laps to go, I didn't lie.

Since you didn't get it, I'll elaborate. Usain Bolt was a natural showman, he didn't have to manufacture the swagger. Obviously it helps when you're the fastest man for a decade running and the WR holder. I was not referring to sprinting effort in the races, although Bolt infamously eased up in Beijing when he ran 9.69 for gold.
I never said I hate Lyles, so don't put words in my mouth. He's a great sprinter, obviously.

My own preference, to give a clear example is Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal over Djokovic. Even though I know Djoker is the GOAT in men's tennis, I don't root for him.
Like you said, Gabby Thomas is a fantastic person and those are the kind of athletes I cheer for.

Not trying to pick a fight, enjoy the rest of the Games.

The 10km, 6.2 mile, open water swim is insane. Watching these folks turn laps in the Seine against the current and avoiding obstacles for 2hrs was something else!

Who knew this was an Olympic sport!

lolz!

Yeah, I'm not sure how he predicted Yavi while watching that whole race---I mean, wtf follows the steeplechase? let alone...track? :D

Other than knowing it would be one of those top 5 midway through, and likely Ethiopian or Kenyan that all the announcers were talking about. Yavi made a lot of moves then fell back, so I started to think she blew it too and was done. But those last two laps were insane.

I don't think I ever saw the steeplechase until 2 Olympics ago and now I seek it out because it's so damn insane.

Yeah but, that's 50/50 at that point in the race. :D

I just rando selected her before the gun and made hers the race I would watch, which is a primary reason that I thought it was so awesome in the end, I figure. It really changes how you watch it. But even in that very last stretch with the last two jumps, it could have gone either way.

I didn't have Yavi at the start, but by 75% through I could see she was the most relaxed and figured she had a great chance to top the podium. Also, I riffed off the commentary.

Steeplechase scares me every time, especially the water jump. In the men's, IIRC the world record holder tripped going over it, hit his head, and they carted him to the hospital. I don't remember seeing that before, but that's exactly the fear.

Was watching the women's breakdancing and 671 from China looks even better than the Rocksteady Crew and NYC Breakers from forty years ago at the height of breaking. I gotta check more of her shit.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is the GOAT (in her event). Hope she will run both the 400m hurdles and the "flat" race in 2028.

LoL

There is a big failure there. Bednarik was a last minute decision for the final and that handoff was fucked up. Maybe they were not in a position to practice the exchanges at that point. Of course, Lyles was expected on the relay but covid nixed that.

I still don't get how Olympic athletes are not fully protected against covid. Getting DQed for handoff is really bad.
