There must be some sort of serious brain impediment that only certain people exhibit, whereby people can believe something so strongly, despite a preponderance of evidence to the contrary. It must be what allows organized religion to thrive. It's why we have a Flat Earth Society. It's why birtherism is still alive and stronger than ever.

Some local talk radio shows and fake news websites are pushing a new conspiracy theory from Infowars that the CIA hacked into a Hawaii state government database to forge former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate... On December 12, Jerome Corsi of the conspiracy theory outlet Infowars claimed that investigators for former Maricopa County, AZ, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, headed by his chief investigator Michael Zullo, had found “evidence that the CIA and or other government entities illegally hacked into Hawaii Department of Health records searching for” Obama’s records.

So how long before this becomes a feature story on Sean Hannity or Fox and Friends? How long before the House calls for an investigation?

I'd say it's the same reason all too many people cling to Trump like a life raft: it's that need to feel that life is more fantastical than it really is, and cling to pet theories that justify racism or a rejection of science.

Obama can't have been born in Hawaii, because that would mean recognizing a black Democrat as a legitimate President. The Earth can't be round, because that would mean accepting science and thus the reality that your life means little in the universe. And with Trump... well, it's easy to cling to the fantasy that brown people are to blame for all your problems, or to pretend that a celebrity billionaire is an outsider champion of the working class just because he doesn't have political experience.

In other news, Trump has not released his original birth certificate or last three years of tax returns.
Nothing that by law he has to, but (tin foil hat, conspiracy theory, Russian doppelgänger sleeper agent) maybe we should get Joe of the South West and his team to check it out.
