Don't think there's a better alternative for a non-rooted device right now. I use it and haven't seen an ad in ages.

I don't know. I don't use google play. I'm sure an ad company(google) isn't happy about programs that block ads though.

The other side of the coin without rooting is to install Firefox and get the extension uBlock Origin to block all ads. I prefer Firefox over Chrome due to the extension called Phony as well. This lets you block all ads in desktop mode without root. I recommend Firefox for its ability to block ads and play YouTube videos while minimized.

I do recommend rooting and using AdAway however as that seems to block all ads including those in the Pandora and Youtube app. Rooting is safe and easy as long as your bootloader is unlocked and you follow the directions for your phone.
