OMG. I think this looks stunning!

However, I do have reservations. I'd rather it be totally manual to put the top down - save weight, cost and complexity of things to break. And I'd prefer if the buttresses were removable. In fact - make it just a two part hard top and I'd be thrilled! Idea being - I can take the targa off any time and store in a shelf in the trunk, but would only remove the buttresses when I have nothing in the trunk or are at home.

I'm still not 100% sure how this automatic targa top thing is going to work out.

I do know I want one =X

It's nice, but it's not for me. I will be buying a soft top. Now hopefully they release a new color that isn't yet another variation of gray...

As a lifelong MX-5 owner and current owner of an NC, I've been planning on getting an ND sometime this year, but I wanted to see this in action.

It's a gorgeous design, but a few things worry me:

  • Weight-- The ND is already a featherweight, and relies on said light weight to negate its comparatively paltry power numbers. I don't think anything has been officially announced yet, but I've hear rumors this will actually weigh MORE than the PRHT on the NC; somewhere around 100 lbs. That's not insignificant, and with the required bracing I'm worried about the feel and likely slight performance hit.

  • Price--A well-optioned (GT or Club) ND already costs north of $30,000. I'm going to guess this will add at least another $2,500 out the door like the PRHT, and probably more dealer markup early on.
That means you're somewhere around $35,000 all told. For a Miata.
Nobody loves MX-5s and respects them as much as myself (my family's owned 9 over the years), but that's just pushing it.

Now, if the Mazdaspeed ND were to be announced, or the Euro and Canadian Recaros made available for the US Clubs, I'd be putting my deposit down tomorrow.

Love it. But the overengineered-car-hater in me just sees a massive repair bill at some point in the future.

The NC PRHT has been around for 10 years this year and has almost completely avoided any recalls or other repair issues or headaches of any note in that time.

If anybody has a great track record with convertible tops and reliability in general, it's Mazda with the Miata. It's about as bullet proof as you get.

I was enamored with Volvo's new XC90...400hp hybrid-electric supercharged turbocharged 2-liter...until I started thinking about future repair costs on such a beast :D

This.

While I don't trust Mazdas in snow/salt areas, I doubt very much a Miata will ever see that. The drivetrain and mechanicals should be very reliable and there isn't anything too 'exotic' about it either. Light and reliable.
