2015 Yamaha R1 to pack 198hp, new chassis, full electronics suite

Fenixgoon

Lifer
damn ,the R1 and R1M are pretty srs. Maybe I can pick up a used one in a few years. No way I could justify dropping that coin on a what is ultimately a track bike (though if i had the money, I totally would!!!)

198hp, 443bs wet (and unlike ducati, posts weight with a full tank of gas 😉)

interial sensors allow for a full suite of electronic control including launch control, wheelie control, and slide control.

the RM1 steps up the game with electronically adjustable ohlins suspension and downloadable telemetry data for in-depth analysis of track performance.

Dude, GTFO. Gotta pay to play.

Is that the universal motto for you douches that are willing to pay however much for whatever without stopping to think if you're being exploited?

Companies must love you guys. Man I'm in the wrong business.

Not tryna thread crap, nice bike. Ridiculous power. Will never ride one.

So now I'm one of "you douches", eh? Tell that to the 3/4 million miles of old Toyotas I have parked in my driveway/garage.

It's a class leading sportbike, and TridenT shows up (yet again) whining about stuff. Maybe you're newer-ish here and haven't noticed yet?

The Z51 performance package adds $5000 to a new Corvette, too. Shall we start complaining about that? No, because it's top-tier performance stuff - which is expensive. If you want fast/cheap, buy used. Everyone knows this. /TFP

i dont know why trident's been trolling and threadcrapping all the motorcycle threads lately.

regardless, it's great to see competition for the track-ready segment - now we have the BMW S1000RR HP4, the R1M, panigale 1299, etc

of course, crashing all that carbon fiber is gonna be $$$$ to fix 😱

I'd be scared to ride one of these. I had an SV650 for a while, but this is a completely different animal...

i imagine you need a very smooth throttle hand 😀

my ninja1000 (not zx10) is actually surprisingly linear in its power delivery. i was very impressed by it.

of course, if you got WOT, you'll absolutely fly. it has a "mere" 140hp.

What's awesome about these track ready bikes is how affordable they really are. If you are a highly skilled rider you can lap faster than the brand new vette Z51 for far less money. The beauty of what Yamaha is offering here is an integrated and tested (by far better riders) package for less than trying to upgrade a stock bike on your own. It's a wonderful way for a journeyman rider to try and get feeder series points on a fairly small budget.

Have you ever turned a lap on a racetrack in a competitive event?

Clearly you have NO IDEA of the cost of setting up even the most basic of track toys.

me too man. As I get older the sensation of speed seems to be magnified for me. When my rd400s front end gets light I get a near heart attack these days. I almost traded a jeep a few months ago for a Busa and the ride I took terrified me. What was most terrifying was that bikes ability to make extreme speed seem easy. I short shifted into third and I was going 150.

I just dont need that risk. I would get comfortable with that speed quickly and be in the jail soon after.

You'd be lucky if it was jail and not a body bag!

Bikes like this R1 (which is awesome) and the 'busa are really just track toys, or at least they should be.

Checked out some ohlins bits for my CBR
Just the rear shock is $1500

I decided that in order for me to start banging out trackdays, the wife will need to return to the workforce.

Forget the fancy gear and start pricing out the basics: track fees, safety gear, competition license (if required), extra consumption of fuel/brakes/tires/oil/chain/etc, some extra repairs and tune-ups, and transport to and from the event. Shit adds up quick, but none of it is really unreasonable IMO.

Dont forget a stock CBR is better than what Wayne Rainey rode to championships.

Like JC said you gotta gear up right but its not insurmountable.

Don't forget the full cost of said bike which can be totalled at a moment's notice.

Allow me to clarify
track fees, safety gear, competition license (if required), extra consumption of fuel/brakes/tires/oil/chain/etc, some extra repairs and tune-ups, and transport to and from the event.

So all I need is an additional $2000 in gear (Race suit, new boots, new gloves.

Nearest track 3-5 hours away, so I need to trailer it, probably grab a hotel.

Right now tires last me a couple of seasons. Toss in track days...not so much.
Bunch of other costs....
plus
My kids need braces and their 529 plan needs deposits...

The 1299 Panigale weighs 395 wet (without fuel). Since the 1199 holds 4.5 gallons of fuel and gasoline weighs approx. 8 lbs per gallon you can add 36 lbs to the wet weight for a total of 431 pounds ready to ride. 😛

And what were Yamaha thinking with that front end? Holy crap that's ugly.

Suspension setup is probably the single most important thing on a motorcycle to get right and it costs many thousands of dollars to change out for the good stuff aftermarket.

I don't think $5500 is out of line for what you are getting.

My point was that racing is expensive, but when you consider how specialized and dangerous it is the cost is not exorbitant. Mostly referring to the "you've gotta pay to play" comments, because it's true - to play racecar/racebike there is a high bar for entry compared to many other hobbies.

you can pick up used gear or rent. uhaul rents trailers for something like $15 a day. you can camp at most tracks and you can pay for an electric hookup. you actually don't use a whole lot of gas when you're on the track. at most you might do like 80 miles if you did something crazy like 8 sessions. if you don't bring extra gas most likely you have to use the race gas they sell at the track which is crazy expensive.

some auto insurance companies will cover track days. it's not considered a race, it's riding on a closed track in a safer environment.

tires are a big costs for track riding. if you get your suspension set up properly for your weight, you actually cut down on tire wear. you could use one of those sport touring tires or some people do sport tire for the front and sport touring rear. you can buy take offs.

definitely not a cheap hobby but there's ways to cut costs.

also, some track orgs will have midday session, where street riders can ride a few laps around the track. if you weren't so far from the track, i would say you could always do something like that just to get a taste.
