Well, consider the cat officially out of the bag. Nearly five months after its debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show touting "at least 625 horsepower," the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has now been SAE-certified to produce an impressive 650 hp.

Complementing the 650 supercharged ponies is an equally impressive 650 pound-feet of torque. Lovely as that second figure is, we really need to break down where the power is available. According to Chevy, 457 pound-feet of torque is available at idle, while 96 percent of peak torque arrives by 2,800 rpm. Honestly, if the Z06 can't hit 60 in under three seconds, we'll be shocked. Talk about a whole lot to handle.

I just want to make sure that the changes don't negatively impact the handling. Having a bug lump of a supercharger up front could easily mess with the driving dynamics and I want to see that they're accounted for that and made it drive as well as the plain c7.

I used to think 350hp was a high number.....

it still is a high number, maybe not relative to cars like the Z06.

I want to like this car, everything about it hits all the right buttons with me, but then it's a chevy, and 'just' a corvette. I need to get over myself and embrace this car

I'm sure you expect this but there is no way they mess with the driving dynamics of this car. I'm sure it will handle better than the base.

The engine is really quite impressive overall - just an engineering marvel. This car is going to be incredible. Especially since the numbers keep being spouted are all $75-$90k for this car.

Honda Accord has had 300hp for some years. 350 just isn't that high anymore all things considered. 400-450 is now the new high number and then we have extremes of 550-700 hp coming out.

Also, it is *very* difficult to be any 2wd car to anything like a < 3s 0-60 time. Whoever that quote in the OP is from really doesn't understand all that goes in to that. 0-60 is a stupid metric once you get in the 4 second range anyway.

That is amazing. Wonder what the price will be.

It looks ridiculous in yellow though. I think black or gray would be the only colors where all those naked carbon intakes, scoops and ground effects wouldn't look so obvious.

The more new ones I see in person the less I think this.

I stopped by a mostly corvette meet-up last week, and there were a few new models. the ones that looked ok were dark colors, hiding what gm did to the thing. the previous generation looked great with tasteful curves. this one just looks like tacky garbage, like a c3, an avalanche and the transformers movie had a threesome after too much bud light.

I don't like the new look personally but I'd still give someone props for driving one because its still a vette.

With this kind of performance, are flappy paddles the way to go?

I test drove a C7 equipped with paddle shifters. I was looking for a manual (stick), but figured I give it a shot. Well, automatic sucked. The salesman said the auto shifted quickly but I sure didn't find that to be the case. It was just sluggish. I then switched it to manual engaging the paddles. MUCH better. So much so that if I'm thinking about getting a Vette in auto. Much more enjoyable to drive in traffic than a stick, and the performance when you want it. And from my understanding, the Z06 will have an even better transmission (faster shifting auto), so there may just be no other excuse to hold on to the manual...well, unless you just like to use a clutch pedal and stick to do your shifting.

I totally understand what you are saying, but I think we have become too focused on the HP number. Hey, I think a lot of HP is awesome, but through personal experience, there is much more than HP to consider.

The vette makes more power than a lot of cars, but I'd rather own/drive some of the lesser powered competitors. Porsche 911/Cayman for example. Cars like the BRZ/FRS and miata have had great success with no more than 200.... granted now you are factoring in price.

I'd rather get more HP for the money than less if I had the choice. For me personally, it's going to take more than a 650 HP rating to get me to want a vette.
