Well, it's not official yet, but if you own one, be on the lookout for smoke.

DETROIT (Reuters) - U.S. safety regulators said on Friday they have opened an investigation into an estimated 50,415 newer Jeep Cherokee SUVs, a key model for the profitability of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, after receiving complaints of engine compartment fires.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it opened the preliminary evaluation into the 2015-model SUVs after a consumer from the San Diego area filed a complaint that their Jeep was "engulfed in flames approximately 20 feet high within seconds of parking the vehicle." There were no injuries reported.

The vehicle was purchased on Jan. 2 and the fire occurred two days later after the SUV had been driven less than 100 miles, according to the complaint filed by the consumer.

In another complaint filed on Jan. 5, the owner of a 2015 Cherokee noticed smoke under the hood while driving the newly purchased vehicle at 60 miles per hour.

In addition, NHTSA said it has identified field report data as part of the Early Warning Reporting program related to the alleged defect, so it opened the investigation to assess cause, scope and frequency of the alleged defect.

Fires are taken more seriously.

I dont disagree, but with 1 car out of 50,000 catching fire, it seems a bit drastic for the NTSB to launch an investigation .

if it were a manufacturer defect, I would expect it to involve a whole lot more cars. Its more likely a loose fuel line or some random electrical failure.

In any event, I'm glad no one was hurt

By the right people. An agency marking a fire report for futher research as an early warning with a brand new model is one thing. But selling it by the news or the OP here as some "investigation" is making a mountain out of a mole hill. 1 Fire and one other I saw smoke once report.

Should have gotten the automated fire suppression system option when they ordered the car.

NHTSA opened the investigation because it has more reports, I think.

That's what this means:

NHTSA said it has identified field report data as part of the Early Warning Reporting program related to the alleged defect

ODI has more data apparently. Office of Defect Investigations?

Twenty foot high flames? Hmmm... :hmm:

In another complaint filed on Jan. 5, the owner of a 2015 Cherokee noticed smoke under the hood while driving the newly purchased vehicle at 60 miles per hour.

How dense was this smoke, that it was noticeable at 60mph? Hell, I had a heater hose rupture once, and at 30mph, you couldn't see the steam from the coolant hitting the exhaust header coming out from under the hood (only once I stopped the car at a light). Sorry, but I find this claim difficult to believe.
