I guess they're taking over the niche that Toyota abandoned with the Rav4. Definitely kids only back there.

Just get a Mazda5 if you are in that market.

This.

We looked at the RAV4 and Highlander before buying the inevitable minivan. Both of them had 3 rows but the 3rd row was essentially useless especially on the RAV4. I like the Rogue but can't imagine the 3rd row is anything but a marketing point and not useful in the real world.

New highlander is supposed to have 3rd which is decent for an adult.
We will find out, i am in the market in the "i need a minivan but dont want to drive a minivan" segment.

We'll see. The only 3-row vehicles other than minivans with decent 3rd row space are the GM triplets (Acadia, Traverse, Enclave) and possibly the new Pathfinder (haven't checked it out yet). My opinion anyway.

My wife wants to get a SUV with 3rd row seating in case her parents visit but usually the bigger SUVs are 10K more than the smaller one. Told her it's not worth it to be used once in awhile, we might as well just rent a minivan. But this has potential. Luckily we're still 2 years out from replacing the Escape.

I checked out the pathfinder.
The third row is about he same as the current highlander.
I would not touch that thing with the transmission issues they are having for a while though. They dont seem to have the CVT figured out for it yet.

Wow, that has GOT to be a tight fit. I honestly can't think of a smaller SUV with third row seating. And I thought the Sorento was cramped ...

At least it looks a lot better than the outgoing model.
Guess Nissan fired whomever designed the Juke. :)

Exactly. Personally, I detest minivans. My wife isn't a huge fan of them, but she's not against them, either. We only have one kiddo right now, but even for stuff like if we have a diaper blowout at a park, you end up having to change them in the car trunk or somewhere else inconvenient when you're not near civilization. But I also don't want to drive a huge SUV like a Tahoe or Suburban. So the Rogue is kind of nice because it's a bit larger than a sedan, but not monster-huge.

FWIW, my buddy has a current rogue. And the thing is not large inside. Car seat and stroller and your about done in the back, which is the same issue we have with the Venza.
The highlander, pathfinder, explorer, flex, GM Triplets are all quite a bit bigger than the rogue and the venza for that matter.

I got a fairly new Kia Sorento for my wife earlier this year and I really like it. It's got a third row that is doable for an adult in a quick ride around town and the V6 is fast. Very happy with it. It also isn't any larger footprint-wise than my mustang (which admittedly is quite long).

I have the 2014 Kia Sorento I got a few months ago, haven't used the 3rd row yet...

Oh sweet !! I just gotta enjoy my old '05. I do miss the auxiliary stereo jack and the high output GDI 3.3 V6 tho ... I really like the looks of the older ones compared to the newer body style, but Kia has come sooo far in 10+ years that you really have to give them a look if you are at all interested in a mid-sized SUV.
