2013: The Critically Acclaimed Games You Thought Sucked

Could get messy, but here goes. What are your thoughts on 2013's critically acclaimed games that you thought sucked. We'll say critically acclaimed = 80+ on metacritic.

Here's a few of mine:

Grand Theft Auto 5
The first few missions were really fun, but the later missions were mostly crappy cover-shooting types. Lots of things to do, but most of the stuff wasn't particularly fun to do. Also, personally, I hate games where you play as annoying characters and I found everyone in the game to be annoying (FWIW, I hated Far Cry 3 as well for that reason).

Bioshock Infinite
Pretty good story, but I hated the gameplay. Searching every room for items was tiresome to me. Some of the bosses I could only describe as un-fun. The one in the graveyard. *shudder*

Ni No Kuni
Not a terrible game, but not the wonderful Miyazaki-esque masterpiece that some critics would have you believe. Agonizingly slow to start, very patronizing dialogue (the game assumes you must be 10 years old, which fair enough I guess), and it gets very repetitive.

Shin Megami Tensei IV
I found this game to be inscrutable. (In fairness, maybe it's because I haven't played any other game in this series.)

Dyad
Maybe I need to be high?

The Last of Us - I know everyone loves it, but I just can't get into it. The story isn't engaging at the start and the gameplay doesn't make me want to wade through it to get to the good story part. It has the same problem I had with Uncharted and I forced my way through that, only to be disappointed I never got to the good parts.

Tomb Raider - Just didn't like this one either. I was never a big fan of the older ones, but they were okay. It doesn't help I am a fairly large Indiana Jones fan and the series (as well as Uncharted) just doesn't feel as good as Temple of Doom.

I had a hell of a time with the Siren the first time, but it was much easier when I bought the Charge upgrade. The shooting is kind of fun in a chaotic sort of way, but it's also somewhat of a letdown in that you get so darned restricted and you get so little ammunition that you have to swap to guns that you probably didn't want to waste the money on upgrading!

Ni No Kuni

I think I ended up somewhat disappointed by this game because of the high hopes that I had for it. I found some of the combat mechanics a bit more frustrating than they should have been. I can't tell you how many times I lost a party member because switching to different commands was rather awkward. I think that is one instance where I would like to be able to just yell at my screen, "DEFENSE!!!" :p

Agree on Borderlands 2 (though technically it was 2012). I really liked the first one, and I liked the writing and humor in the second one but the gameplay took a nosedive into un-fun territory (yes, my go-to adjective for gameplay that simply is not fun). Maybe it was just the class I rolled (assassin), but some encounters were just frustrating grinds. The creatures that turned invisible, the guys with shields, the flying mechs, all made me constantly scream at the TV "HOW IS FIGHTING THESE THINGS FUN???" especially in True Vault Hunter Mode.

Was it 2012? Damn this useless memory of mine. I'm going senile at 32. lol

There was so much DLC coming out I thought it released earlier in the year, I never purchased any DLC for it.

Agreed with Bioshock, mainly because of undelivered promises. None of the previously seen gameplay made it into the final game.

That said I still liked it enough to finish it. It just didn't live up to my expectations given the hype, and I should have waited for a sale.

I also didn't play too many 2013 releases so not much to let me down.

i really had no expectations for gta5 because i thought 4 was terrible, but i gave it a go and it was just as expected. i didn't give it more than the first mission to know i wouldn't like it. but i wouldn't say it is a surprise to me because i expected that.

bioshock i was kind of the same way. i didn't like the first one but i rented the new one because it looked kind of neat and got a lot of acclaim. after 2 hours i returned it to redbox. i just found it flat out boring.

i was going to come in and say killzone: shadowfall, but i looked on metacritic and it doesn't even have higher than an 80 on there lol.

so i guess i don't really have anything to contribute :(

Bioshock Infinite was a let down.

I did enjoy the last DLC, though...all 38 minutes of it.

A game I was geeked for. Not big into JRPG's but specially here people were all over it. Heck it even got me to shed a tear or two early. But its horrible game play and combat mechanics completely destroyed any opportunity to enjoy it. 3-4 hours after the initial heartbreak and the story had gone nowhere and the kid was acting liking everything was normal. Glad I didn't purchase it and only rented it. I was hoping it would be a good way to break into JRPG's so I could burn find some older releases to get on the PS3 that i had barely used to get some use out of it before I retired it.

I just bought Tomb Raider from Amazon since they're having the $5 PC digital download promotion. I doubt I'm going to like it since I didn't like any of the prior ones, but it was almost free so I'll give it a spin.

Last of Us I haven't played yet, but I plan on buying when it gets below $20. Another hyped game I'm skeptical of, but I feel like it's one of those games that I have to play to keep my gamer badge.

This tomb raider is closer to an Uncharted game than the old Tomb Raiders.

lol.

Single play games like Bioshock INfinite I buy, finish, sell. So, I never even have them around for DLC, unfortunately. But 38 min is silly.

BI was good, but it was overrated. My hardest fight actually was the first one with that really big dude, I seem to recall.

GTA V was basically exactly what I expected, and I really liked it.

BIO-2- after the first two it was cake walk, way to easy, way to short, I enjoyed, but man a game needs to last.

Last of us- I cant agree- easily one of the best games i have played, but opinion, is just that.. opinions.

Loved Tomb Raider too- but its not really a Tomb raider game, its more a Action/survival with some Tombs added so you have puzzles (and you can call it Tomb Raider).

NO my gripe, all the EARLY ACCESS games: they all look dang good, but are not even quite often playable in any real sense. And even knowing this it i have bought to many. These are not early access, they are Foundations of games, with no game built yet, but the blueprint is there.. Its my own fault for buying um, I know.. but the promise of a great game is hard to resist. Most of the game below will be good games, but disappointed when I paid early.

SIr you are being Hunted: so clunky its painfull (but better interface will help)

Prison Architect- fun actually, but just about 4-5 hours of things to do, then build more cells, and more, and more..

Might & Magic X - Legacy- game breaking bugs less then 15-20 minutes in(again was fun, so was very disappointed).

damn -console gameing- not PC.. sorry, i read both and forget sometimes.

I just googled that. Never knew it existed; people actually PAY for pre-release games? A lot of release games should be skipped until patched. I can't believe people pay for something still in development. You really shouldn't be upset if it's not functioning properly.

Well, I have a feeling that a few of the people here played some of these games on the PC rather than the console. They just get a pass because they were also released on the consoles. :p

Well, it's really not much different than using Kickstarter, but in this way, you actually get a game to play rather than an empty promise.
