Both VW and Volvo don't have a great reputation in reliability...

Rule of thumb "Don't own a German (or European) car outside of warranty period"

German Engineering has NOT changed since World War 2. They are overly complex and expensive for no apparent reason.

Check out Ford/GM products in that sector (they are quite nice). Also Japan/Korea has a lot to offer as well.

Definitely would not buy either.
Main reason, cost of repair and reliability.

What about an Infiniti EX35? Those things are beautiful, and their powertrain is awesome.

Although I've had different models I've found the Volvo reliable, and the VW subject to quirky electrical problems that became so bad I had it put down.

Not sure where you're getting your info. Germans make GREAT cars and if anything, they over-engineer their products. VW is the low end there, so the reliability isn't there. Porsche, Mercedes, BMW...they all have higher than normal reliability rates across the board.

If I could make a suggestion, check out a Porsche Cayenne. They're a better-built version of the VW Touareg, fairly cheap now, and the S version is a BLAST to drive.

Own the XC60 and love it. Based on price, it was down to the Acura MDX and XC60. Being in the city and for mileage, I went with the XC60.

Not a fan of the Tiguan. The XC60 will be better in reliability too. The 5 yr/50000 mile warranty is nice as it covers all schedule maintenance and everything except for tire wear even wipers are covered.

If cargo room is need, the EX35 provides none. Heck the FX45 provides less cargo room than XC60 and a little more than the Tiguan.

I cant even bring myself to consider the Tiguan just because of the name. Not making this up VW named it that because it is part Tiger and part Iguana.

I choose European cars for the better handling and performance. I test drove both ford and honda equivalents just to make sure they had not caught up and they haven't. The base features of the tiguan and xc60 are better than most other brands as well. To get similar in a ford, chevy or honda I have to add a package or step up higher in model line.

I'm not worried about the reliability either. My wife and I have owned 5 VW's and reliability hasn't been an issue. We have always worked nice deals on an extended warranty\maintenance package. I normally don't keep my cars longer than 4 years anyway so I'm not going to do more than 80k.

Kind of with you there. A standard Euro car feels solid, and the engine and suspension feel like the designers put some work into it, and the interior isn't made out of Styrofoam-laced plastic (I'm looking at you GM). Ford is starting to get the hint on this not being acceptable, and GM is importing some cars from its overseas branches and rebadging them (The Pontiac G8 was actually an Australian Holden Commodore...and probably the best Pontiac ever introduced).

I'm sick of stereotypical American boats that corner like tug boats, have V8's that produce 250HP, and have brakes the size of milk caps.

Isn't the Tiguan in the inexpensive and small SUV category, while the XC60 is in the luxury and small category? The latest Car and Driver rated the Tiguan dead last in a comparison of the VW, Kia, Honda, Mazda, and Ford small SUVs. They complained about the harsh ride and higher price of the VW. The 2013 Ford Escape came in 1st. If you want a luxury SUV, why not look at the Infinity (like suggested above) and Acura RDX?
