Republican National Convention events delayed due to Isaac

TAMPA -- The events planned for the Republican National Convention on Monday will be postponed due to severe weather predictions near the conference's host city, Republican officials said Saturday.

"The Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th," said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in a statement Saturday. "After consulting with Governor Scott, NOAA and local emergency management officials, we are optimistic that we will begin an exciting, robust convention that will nominate the Romney-Ryan ticket."

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to reach the Florida mainland early next week.

The RNC plans to submit a revised schedule Sunday, Priebus wrote in a memo to convention attendees.
The full memo:
MEMO
DATE: August 25, 2012
FROM: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus @Reince
TO: Interested Parties
RE: RNC Convention
Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th, exact time to follow.

Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area. RNC Convention officials and the Romney campaign are working closely with state, local and federal officials, as well as the Secret Service, to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac and preserve Florida's emergency management resources. Officials have predicted participants may encounter severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain.

The Republican National Convention will take place and officially nominate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and the Party has other necessary business it must address. We also are remaining in constant contact with state and federal officials and may make additional schedule alterations as needed.

The Convention staff is working around-the-clock to ensure the delegations housed in storm-
impacted areas have alternative housing if needed. The Committee on Arrangements will provide additional information to delegates and alternate delegates who are affected by Isaac by Sunday morning. We will also provide guidance to those delegates and alternate delegates who may encounter travel difficulties due to the storm.

We will begin issuing revised convention programming as early as Sunday.

We have an experienced team that will ensure changes are operationally smooth and create as little disruption as possible.

The most important concern is safety, but our Convention program will proceed.

Joe Biden scraps plan to crash GOP party as Isaac storm takes aim

Tropical Storm Isaac won’t stop the GOP from nominating Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for the presidential ticket.

But the potential hurricane’s approach did cause the White House to scrap Vice President Joe Biden’s planned trip to Tampa for the convention’s opening day on Monday.

The decision came after local law enforcement in Tampa pointed out that the vice president’s presence in the city on the eve of the convention would strain already stretched police resources, especially given the storm’s approach.

"This change in schedule is being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm, as well as those attending the activities in Tampa,” read a missive on the White House web page.

Honestly the only thing that surprises me about this is that it didn't happen yesterday. Tampa has been in the "cone of uncertainty" for some time now. They will be affected, but how badly is not yet known. Besides, anyone worth their salt planning a convention in Florida during hurricane season will have an emergency plan for this type of situation.

I bet there will be some pretty serious "hurricane parties" for those that are still in the area though.

So does this mean God hates Republicans.

Probably because of their unwillingness to oppose divorce and having bastard children.

And having sex with gay prostitutes.

I had the same question.

If a hurricane or other natural disaster were going to disrupt the DNC, I'm sure there would be some claims along those lines. It would fit the modus operandi of the far religious right, anyway.

Palin supporters passing out flyers asking to vote for her if there is an open convention (different than a brokered convention which is basically impossible now, not that an open is all that more likely). I doubt she knows, but at least her supporters are willing to give her another shot vs Obama considering '08....

And on a more hysterical note: http://www.palinaspresident.us/

Thank you Dave for being the OP on this update thread. As I agree that GOP officals made the correct decision given unforseen hurricane complications.

As I also do not believe in divine intervention in any way.

But who knows, will the democrats be equally lucky at their national convention scheluded in South Carolina 10 days or so later. Who knows yet, as some unnamed tropical depression may streagthen into a hurricane and crash straight into South Carolina
at the very moment of the democratic 2012 national convention.

Just food for thought.

It shows God loves the GOP...the hurricane chased away Biden. :)
