2012 car sales

http://online.wsj.com/mdc/public/page/2_3022-autosales.html

as much as everyone hated the old civic, it seems it sold well. new one selling really well.

Buyers Disagree with Consumer Reports Recommendations, Civic Sales Soar

"One would expect its sales to slump; but instead, they have gotten through the roof. Civic deliveries have increased this year by 40 percent through September, to 234,029 units and Honda’s compact car is on course to regain the segment crown in the U.S. after finishing third last year behind the Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Cruze.

This brings up an interesting question: how much does automotive experts’ testing weigh on buyers’ decision when the time comes to buy a new car?"

Interesting indeed. After getting trashed by Consumer Reports, the Civic set a new annual sales record.

Does seem to call into question the judgement of "automotive journalists."

The Chevy Cavalier was a best seller at one point and it was a garbage compared to all it's rivals at the time. The GM trucks outsold Ford for the month is another example. Reputation and brand loyalty will take sales a long ways.

Obviously my comment didn't take.

The 2012 Civic was bashed by reviewers but when it comes to the average consumer they don't read Consumer Reports and they don't necessarily worry about the looks of a car. They are looking for reliability, which the civic still had, familiarity, and mpg's now.

Take my mom for example. Exterior looks are her least important. She worries most about mpg and if it is acceptable. Then how is the interior. Does she like the room of it and is it comfortable. How about reliability? Is it proven or speculated to be reliable. Lastly if the look she can deal with she'll get it even if she isn't fond per se.

It seems to me the Civic was beat up so badly for the design of the car. So the average consumer might not care as much and just want something reliable, with good mpg and to get from point a to b.

I don't think that automotive reviews affect people's decisions too much. If it is cheap enough, simple enough, reliable enough, and gets you where you need to go then it will sell. The Cavalier is one such example. To the dash-stroker crowd, it was crap. To people who seriously abuse and neglect their cars, it kept them on the road. Those things could take a lot of neglect/abuse compared to other models. If you took care of them properly, like I do (240k miles and counting), then they will keep kicking for a very long time. To each his own I suppose...

What's a "Large" car?

Nowadays, a Chevrolet Impala counts as "large". I suppose the Ford Taurus and Chrysler 300 count as well. There are no true body-on-frame full size sedans anymore since the Panther platform (Crown Vic/Mercury Grand Marquis) was discontinued. 😡

Odd... I test drove the 2012 Civic, and hated it. The ergonomics and gauge placement just seemed weird to me. I got a Chevy Cruze instead.

It's also a bummer that there are no longer any large new cars that are not luxury cars. I kinda miss seeing the old Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, and Buick Roadmasters in the showroom.

That's GM's fault for having two "separate" trucks. There's a reason Ford has outsold GM for 30+ some odd years in a row. GM's brand dilution is their fault.

After being on vacation for the past couple weeks, I think I know where Chrysler's numbers came from.

Every.Single.Rental car is either an Avenger/200/Caravan

I'm pretty sure Hawaii has like a 50% concentration of Chrysler models for that reason.

also, F series outsold GM

For 2012
General Motors Corp. Total Light Trucks 1,564,859
Ford Motor Company Total Light Trucks 1,482,363

I would expect Ford to outsell GM in Light Trucks due to GM having a older line and Ford the newwer engines and line. But 2012 seems GM sold more.

GM has more truck lines and names. So if you cout only 1 part to another small part Ford may win. But when looking at ALL light trucks sold GM wins. GM also outsold ford in 2011 as well.

The Civic is a tad peculiar... I personally think the 8th gen is a lot nicer (that is what I have) but the 2012 keeps selling. The refresh looks good at least, for the 2013 model year.

F-Series. Looking at the same report you are, it looks like (my assumption) that they're including SUVs and their van lines in as light truck sales. (Beats the hell out of me) Using the original link - YTD 2012 sales numbers - F-Series is outselling Chevy + GMC combined. There have been years where the F-Series didn't outsell both brands combined, but then again, if GM really wanted the best selling truck crown, they wouldn't have diluted their own brand by having something an actual competitor in their own lineup vs a complement.

Typically, light truck = everything not classified as a car, or very large truck.

SUV, van, etc (the stuff that gets to ignore a lot of the car laws like gas guzzler taxes) do fit in that category.

Difference of priorities. The journalists talk about style and features. Most of normal folks just want a car that won't screw up immediately after driving off the lot. Sales for the current year are not about the current year cars. They are based on the previous years. My gf's parents had a 2004 Chevy Epica, and it had constant stupid problems. The check engine light comes on for no reason, accessory lights burn out, weird noises, etc. Do you think they'll buy a GM again? They sold this car to my gf for next to nothing, so now it's our problem to deal with. The engine/tranny are so crappy that it takes 13 seconds to get from 0-60 even though it has a 2.5L engine. While getting such record breaking low performance, it also gets horrendous gas mileage. My parents have a 2005 Nissan Altima with a 3.5L V6 that has 100hp more and somehow gets better gas mileage. WTF, GM? Were their engineers on PCP when they designed this car? Why does it suck so bad?

The current Honda Civic might suck, but I thought my 2006 Civic was a pretty good car. It engine and tranny seemed to work ok, the steering wasn't sloppy, and it didn't have problems with things randomly breaking. Would I consider buying a Honda in the future? Absolutely.

The Toyota Camry hasn't gotten much love from the press either, but it's the refrigerator box that people want for their daily commute.

The 2012 Camry is generally considered a much nicer car than the one it replaced and most press that spends more than a day with it has been quite pleased with the car. Interesting thing about the 2012 Camry is that the SE trim has accounted for something like 60% of all sales. It was a very aggressively priced and well configured trim only $500 more than the base LE and Toyota is trying to push a "younger" image of the brand.

Never understood why Mazda doesn't sell more. Reasonably priced, reliable, fun to drive, nice looking, full product line, been here for decades ... and they sell half as many as Kia. 😕

Mazda's were never cheap or economy class. They made some good cars, but the bread and butter was as competitive as Honda, Toyota or Nissan.

Mazda has some interesting cars, the CX5 crossover is a hit, while the Mazda 5 mini minivan is a bust.

the reliability rankings for mazda haven't been all that great. hecho in japan is not the same as reliable (look at mitsubishi) (that said my mazda3's been better than my sentra was). until the mazda6 and mazda3 were released about a decade ago there wasn't really much to commend on their normal passenger cars.

Ding ding. It was horrible back in the day. The new crop 3/6 has been better, but it's not Honda/Toyota.
