And you speak from personal experience? You certainly have interesting view on cars. This and your comment about Z06 on another car thread here have me scratching my head. Perhaps you should stick with commenting on cars you've actually driven like Scion xB.
LOL. I'm a car buff and have a wide range of cars under my belt. I also drive a Scion xA as a commuter car for work (big difference
🙂 ). Having a family means giving up the gear-head days unfortunately, but they'll be grown in a few years and I can get back into the game hopefully.
I used to memorize car stats like baseball cards. My first boss was a car collector and racer, so I had the fortune of driving quite a few unusual cars both on the road and on the track. I learned to drive a stick in a very accurate Porsche 356 replica (he was too fat to fit behind the wheel, so I drove it).
At 18 I raced his 1970 Corvette Stingray convertible. It had the 350/370hp option on it, and custom side pipes. The car turned like a truck but when in straight lines very nicely. We were pulling high 13's in the 1/4 mile with it. I remember it having so much torque you could go from 0-100 in 3rd gear
🙂
At 19 I bought a 1984 Mustang GT with T-Tops and a HO 5.0L. I had that car for 5 years, and it was fun at first, but was a victim of 1980's automotive engineering: they used aluminum valve covers on a steel engine, meaning different expansion rates. The gaskets would leak oil about every 6 months and screw up every parking space you stopped at.
At 21, I participated in making a Ferrari 308 kit car out of a Pontiac Fiero. I probably learned more engineering out of this than anything I've done in my life. Our creation did 0-60 in about 8s and we sold it completed for $15000. Best summer of my life
🙂
At 22 I bought a 1972 Super Beetle and drove that for 3 years. It had a rare semi-auto 3 speed and was fun to tweak the motor. I managed to get 91mph out of the stock 1500cc engine. That car had some engineering solutions that we would find hilarious today. The window washer pump used the air from the spare tire for pressure. The heater was blown directly off the engine, meaning your cabin smelled like exhaust, and the defrosters didn't work if it was too cold outside. Had some good times in that car.
At 25 I joined a racing group at Milan Speedway in Michigan, about people would bring in their tuner cars to race. We had a lot of car talk at the time, and we found the ins and outs of nearly anything on the road. The best cars of the time (Anything with a VTEC, RX-7, BMW 3-series, 300Z's...), and a lot of fails. We saw a couple of NSX's on the track at the time, and the RX-7's would wipe the floor with them for half the price.
The next year my daughter was born, I got a 60hr/week job, bought a house, and became domesticated. I still keep up on the industry, go to all the car shows, and give advice to people on the best cars for the money, but I can't own anything cool anymore until the kids get their college squared away.
The wife gave me the go-ahead for a roadster though, so after trying an Elise, a Z4, a Sky Redline, and a Miata, I've settled on a Porsche Boxster S. Looking to get back into the gave around 2014, so I'll see you then.
Sorry for the life history, but you asked for it. And I also stand by my assessment of the Z06. It's a great track car, but you would hate it for a daily driver.
