2011 Triumph Speed Triple first road ride: 'it's an absolute joy'

Triumph’s new 2011 Speed Triple 1050 is a ‘demon road tool’ according to MCN’s Trevor Franklin is currently riding the motorcycle in Spain.

Firing back his first thoughts after a brief road ride this morning in Ronda, Southern Spain, Franklin said:

"When you’ve got a grunt laden engine like the 1050cc unit it doesn’t demand a lot of gear box action and on flowing roads it’s an absolute joy.

"The revised seating position has proven comfortable and the new chassis geometry makes the steering on par with its smaller sibling the Street Triple. It looks like Triumph have thrown in another winner into the super naked ring."

Read Trevor’s full report in next week’s Motorcycle News on Wednesday.

I like the speed triple, I like the Rocket III even more. Yes, it's ugly as hell, and a great huge pig of a machine, but you could mount a backhoe on it, how cool would that be?

That's just scary to me. All those expensive parts exposed. I'd be afraid to drag a knee with that bike. You go down and it's gonna hurt that bike. Probably better for a more sane rider. Looks sweet though.

Like the thin painted plastics on your bike are providing any protection to the engine casings? I was riding Palomar a couple summers ago with a friend of mine and we stopped at this scenic overlook area and there was a guy there who lowsided his Yamaha R1. The plastics were all tore up on the right side of the bike and the engine casing was split open and all the oil had leaked out. He also had all the right side foot controls ripped off the bike along with damage to the right side clipons.

Fairings protect absolutely nothing, they just cover up the mechanicals underneath and provide a more aerodynamic shape to the bike. In fact, those plastics you love so much just drive up insurance costs and many times just make the bike a total write off for small things like a tip over.

Two words: Frame Sliders

Silly Jules, everyone knows the more stickers you have, the more protected you are.

Who in their right mind would buy frame sliders and case guards and aftermarket levers when you can just sticker that shit?

Real men skip stickers and go straight to faux fur...

I really need to ride a 109. I've sat on one in a showroom, it's an enormous pig of a machine, but it has serious torque and horsepower. For reasons I don't understand, the 109 often gets compared to the V-Rod, and I've seen a couple forum wars over which is faster. One of which ended up with a grudge match at the track.

I love Triumphs, but I am drooling of the Norton Commando's return

Their website gives a list price of 13,995 and that's in British Pounds...not dollars. Is it even available in the US?

Ducati tried this with the GT1000 Sport Classic. They had 3 models I think when it first came out but they've scaled that back to 1 now and it doesn't sell particularly well. A good friend of mine has one and while it is a great bike it isn't any faster than my bike even though it cost twice as much and has a 1000cc engine vs my 650cc engine.

This is not my friend's bike but it is pretty close. He actually spent a few thousand on top of the cost of his bike new on a Termignoni exhaust, bar end mirrors, a set of used Marchesini wheels and front Brembo brakes off another Ducati from a different line. I like his bike a lot but I don't think I'd ever buy one...and I have ridden it.

I've also seen it compared to the V-Rod. I'm guessing which is faster will have more to do with the rider. 109s have been seen clicking off 11 second quarter mile times in essentially stock trim, so with the right rider they can be very, very fast. They are big but handle well, and stop remarkably well too.
