Ford bringing the heat!

Would like to know if that 3.7L is the Duratec engine and what other cars/trucks it will be going into.

Some potential future Mustang news comes by way of an internet forum user who calls himself TheInsider. With a handle like that, he must know what he's talking about, right? We kid. But some of the rumors he spills gives with what we've been hearing too. In any case, this source tells the masses at The Mustang Source that the 2011 Mustang's 3.7-liter V6 will be rated at 315 horsepower, neatly outperforming the direct-injected 3.6-liter unit installed in the Chevrolet Camaro by a handful of ponies. But wait, there's more!

Moving up the power ladder a step, the 2011 GT will see a bump up to an even 400 horsepower, which we're expecting to come from the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and those horses will be corralled though a new six-speed manual gearbox. Unfortunately, because the base V6 will sport so much additional power, the mooted EcoBoost model may never come to fruition.

As we've previously heard, rumor has it that the '11 Stang with the new Coyote V8 and Track Pack with Pirelli P Zero Corsa R tires was able to lap GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan at the same rate as a current BMW M3 ? fine company indeed. The final two insights of note are that next year's GT500 will be blessed with an aluminum block and that a Boss edition is slated for 2012. Not surprisingly, six pages have accrued on the thread since yesterday morning. Click here to check out the banter in its entirety.

DI 3.7L Duratec?

standard 3.5 'enlarged', everybody does that:
Infiniti G37 from Nissan's 3.5 , Acura TL 3.7, etc.

finally, that V6 SOHC 4.0L 210HP engine will go to retirement

EDIT: Mazda has already done that, Mazda 6 uses duratec 3.7, so probably mustang will get engine based on that one

That is the big question. DI 3.7L Duratec should be able to make 315HP as in current configuration it makes 273HP.

The Duratec 3.7L is currently used in the Lincoln MKT & MKS. Mazda 6 & CX9.

Got a single shread of proof for that, or are you just as trollish as you seem?

These engines have been in development for years (Coyote especially) and Ford has been planning on upping the horsepower for a LONG time.

Will you guys still make fun of people buying the V-6? The current V-8 also has 315hp, correct?

I think it's great to be able to buy a sporty car for under $30K that gets ~30MPG hwy, but has enough get-up-and-go to be fun when you need. The 'Stang will probably be 200-300 pounds lighter than the Camaro so the V-6 will probably do 0-60 around 5.4-5.6, which is plenty fast IMO.

you are probably right, Nissan does direct injection to their 3.7L engine, However, Ford had never put anything too advanced or expensive in their base engine. This still has to sell for same price.

Nissan does do direct injection for the engine in the Infiniti M series, but most of their engines are not direct injection. There is word that they may migrate this to the Infiniti G series soon (G37, etc) but I haven't heard any official word. The standard FI is ~330 HP, do I would guess DI would up this a little bit.

I agree with some other posters that the new V6 offering for the Mustang will finally be pretty solid. They basically will be offering the current GT power (V8) as the new entry-level model (V6).

Yes, because a V6 still sounds like a V6. IMO, they shouldn't even sell a V6 Mustang. It's like selling a V6 Corvette. You just don't do it. You can't afford a V8 Corette? Well I guess you don't get a Corvette. But I understand why Ford sells V6 Mustangs.

Anyway, I was looking to get a Mustang GT this year, but we'll see how this 2011 Mustang plays out.

It has outsold the Mustang for the past three months straight.

a mustang does not cross shop with a corvette. the stang has always had a 6-cyl (and sometimes 4-cyl) option and those typically sell better than the V8's.

Probably adjusted spark plugs/compression ratio. New manufacturing technique (?) made the engine stronger, it's able to be more durable.

Just guessing here. It could be the 273 is deliberately underrated to increase MPG.

Wow, that V8 with 400+ HP sounds awesome. That's quite a big jump in horsepower over their previous models.

Yes, it sounds awesome! 😀

Slapping on a turbo or a supercharger should be interesting.

:Q Still, to be fair to the M3, the Mustang did have some pretty nice tires on it. 😛

But the M3 is this performance behemoth, the Mustang is still on a live axel (yes I know ZV, don't kill me, but it still is surprising)

Ya I wonder if they beefed the durability on the engine? I have a 2005 GT and it is modded out to 400 hp. Everything I read says not to go past 450 with out changing the insides to handle more HP. Adding a super charger to the 2011 could easily get 550 hp, then adding a new exhaust kit and we look at 600hp 😀

Hell, I think 2007/8 Super Snakes were able to get 725 bhp out of the 4.6 (or was it 5.4...I'm pretty sure it was 4.6) V8...but this was with no warranty.

A 600 HP V8 was offered with a 3 year warranty.

edit: its 2008, it's a GT500 2008, so it's a 4.6L V8.

Wow! A 400 horsepower V8 with a six speed gearbox? Amazing!!

Sorry for the sarcasm. I'm having trouble getting excited about this as Holden did it 5 years ago and GM brought it here under the Pontiac label as the GTO. People just like the Mustang I guess because it still outsold the GTO. Maybe the goat wasn't retro enough with the styling, more likely it was the price point. If they sold it for high 20's instead of mid 30's they would have sold a ton of them. Car and Driver did a review on the two cars head to head and while they flat out admitted the GTO out performed the Mustang in every way, the Mustang was still their car of choice because of the "Gotta Have It" factor. I think I'd still rather have the new Camaro than the Mustang though. Everybody has a Mustang these days.

The 3.7l engine in the new 370Z makes around that much. Why the surprise?

what surprise?

what would be interesting is if ford does it on regular.

actually what would be most interesting is if this is an early year model, say april 09 rather than later.
