Well, the Nissan VQs produce more HP (337 I think), the hit in MPG is not strictly engine related. It has to do with gearing, wheels, tires, weight, etc.

Also real world Fuel Economy is different than the EPA numbers. The Fusion Hybrid comes up extremely short in real world tests (gets similar MPGs with the Camry Hybrid), though it's EPA rating is much higher.

Usage is also huge. My 2GR-FE gets me 19/28 in my car, however I have only once gotten 28MPG during a long trip. I usually get 20-25mpg, and I do mostly highway.

I know I'm one of few, and despite the fact that I generally like the G37/370z, I don't really care for the VQ37... It vibrates a ton, it doesn't feel smooth in the shifter, and the sound is like I put a motor in a bathroom to listen to the reverb...

Yes, I am crazy.

I don't think you're in the few, lots of people dislike the VQs for its unrefined nature.

electric power steering..that explains some of the mpg gains, no PS pump to drive, hopefully it does not feel like crap.

and hopefully the price doesn't creep up too much. The V8 camaro costs as much as a G37 now.

I recall seeing a price that was slightly above 30 with destination.

The final official EPA numbers have come out for the Mustang and it manages 31 MPG highway for the auto trans model (30 MPG for the manual). 19 city for both trans.

That is an impressive highway number but the city rating is a little disappointing.

19 city, by the new standards, is actually pretty good considering the cars weight and power.

I have to say, this car looks better to me all the time. I could see me driving a 2011 Mustang GT in a year or two.

Definitely impressive all around. I will be interested to see how the steering is affected (how well they implemented the electric power steering).

How is the VQ unrefined?
I can't really think of a smoother/more powerful/better running engine than a VQ35. Wards 10 best engines list would agree. (Not for the last 2 years but most years prior)
That's why I keep getting cars with that engine. It rocks!

Heh, I probably wouldn't. I hate the image of muscle cars.
I used to. The older I get the more, inexplicably, I want one. I've never had a close friend or even distant relative who has owned a muscle car. I have been in only one. I've never driven one myself. I don't even know anybody personally who owns one, but I want one. Maybe it's because I like to stick out because I'm an attention whore IRL, too. Not sure :)

Says the guy with a riced out Camry

Sorry, my car looks stock and is all OEM. You wouldn't know that look even if an Audi hit your VW. If Germans had to appoint a rice candidate, they'd point you towards the nearest VW dealer.

Yea, I just don't want the "I drive a muscle car and am therefore either a die-hard conservative or a high school dropout" image.

Image? Who gives a crap about image? For me it's all about the driving experience, and these new Mustangs are plenty fun to drive. A hell of a lot more fun than a Camry that's for sure. :p

I frequently recommend G35 and other VQ-powered cars here on the forums as well as in person (depending on desires/budget/practicality of course).

That said, the VQ is not a 'smooth' engine in the way that the BMW i6 is for example. Even the Subaru boxer motor is notably smoother in operation / exhaust. The VQ does provide, and has for a long time, a good amount of power, a pretty wide powerband, and reasonable fuel economy in a mass-produced and pretty reliable package.

As for 'more powerful', eh? It's right on target with other premier motors of similar displacement.

The exhaust note and motor noise is the chief complaint against the VQ, and that is a very person-to-person personal opinion issue. I don't mind it much myself, but I do vastly prefer the sound of an LSx or inline sixer. Would I pass up on a G37 or 370z just due to exhaust noise? No way. Though it looks like the new 5.0 GT blows any idea of me buying a 370z out of the water. If I have ~$35k to spend on a sporty car, only a used Vette or M3 would really cross my mind in comparison.

Well like I can't go to work with cut-offs and a wife beater, I can't seriously consider owning a Mustang or Camaro.

I've had a Mustang as rental and they are fun, even with the V6 sucked.
