2011 Ford Explorer = 2011 Ford Edge???

Ok how is the new 2011 Explorer not the same as a Edge?

I think they are both very decent rides, just how can Ford support so many of the same thing... Explorer, Edge, Flex, Expedition, Exhibition, Exorbitant, Excuse, Expendable..? You know they will have Mercury and Lincoln variants of each, are they tarded? GM has just tried this for the last 40 years.

Well for one, it is named the Explorer and not the Edge.

They are different vehicles.
The Edge is a Crossover, the Explorer a mid-size SUV. The Explorer is a little bulkier, and a different platform than the Edge, though that platform will now be a somewhat similar to the smaller platform.

I think the real question is why is the Focus and Fiesta so ugly? I can see why the Fiesta is ugly (it's not too ugly). But it is supposed to be cheap. But they keep making an ugly Focus. Though I guess I am glad they got away from the turtle shell version.

You're right. The Explorer shares the same platform as the Flex, Taurus and Lincoln MKT.

Mercury is dead. The Ford Board of Directors voted last week to further diversify Lincoln cars from the Ford cars that they are related to. They'll still be based on the same platform, but for example the MKT is no longer going to be an Explorer with some chrome on the taillights. You're going to see different things from Lincoln going forward.

Towing for one.....Edge has a 3500# tow rating, the Explorer has a 5000# rating.

The Mustang's excellent handling precludes the need for an IRS.

2) Two different platforms
3) One is marketed as a CUV (Edge), the other as a SUV (Explorer). The definition of these two terms is vague though
4) 3500lbs of towing for the Edge, 5000lbs of towing for the Explorer

independent suspension was done for packaging reasons. apparently it's easier to design a seat that folds into the floor with the independent suspension than with the old axle. same with the expedition.


mustang has a solid axle because that's how god intended it (and apparently the handling, if worse off, is still better than its direct competitors so only old 240sx drivers ever bring it up, jello)

The only people I ever hear complaining about the solid rear axle in the Mustang are paper racers. They sum cars up by the "features" the car has rather than the experience the car provides.

Lets face it, engineering is all about compromise. Both Solid and IRS have their pluses and minuses for various applications. Ford went with a solid rear axle and you never hear complaints from people who own the current generation Mustangs.
