2010 Toyota Tacoma: Satellite Radio

I recently purchased a 2010 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner TRD crew cab. I decided to stick with the stock radio system (couldn't justify spending $1500 more on the JBL system).

With this said, apparently the stereo is "Satellite Capable", and has the antenna already installed on the top of the truck. I tried to contact my sales rep about what else I needed, but she was really no help.

What else do I need to get satellite radio going?

is the antenna really already installed? My 10 Prius (HOLLA) has a button for sat but I assume it's not got any actual hardware in place for it.

Yes, the antenna is installed, I have a button for "SAT", but nothing happens. Seems like I am missing some sort of component.

Not sure what you plan to listen to, but I cancelled my XM subscription a year ago because the music channels were compressed into oblivion. They sounded worse than a 128kbs MP3 stream. For talk radio and sports stuff it wouldn't be so bad. But music was unlistenable.

Just my $.02

I use it for music and it is just fine. It's above FM but below CD quality.

I like my solution better than using a dedicated in car receiver: get a portable unit that you can dock in your car. That way you can have one subscription and listen to it at home, in the car and at work.

I felt the same way with Sirius. The music quality was sub-par...very disappointed.

Not to plug myself too bad, but I have a Delphi Skyfi2 receiver with car kit for sale. 🙂

My Saturn is also XM Capable, but it was easier / cheaper / better for listening to just get a nice unit.

Instead of the crappy in-dash readout for XM I have a nice, full display, lots of presets, remote control, and with the Skyfi2 you can timeshift broadcasts. I haven't seen an in-dash system for XM short of the MyLincoln / Sync giant LCD ones that are worth a salt for big listeners.

If you have a phone that supports Pandora, that is also a great alternative. Maybe I'm in a good area, but I can listen to Pandora 99.9% of the time and the sounds quality seems better than XM. I've been able to cancel the XM on the Cadillac and I'm going to let the trial expire on the Vette.

Yeah i'm noticing this in my new Jetta as well. Honestly HDRadio sounds the same if not better as the Sat stuff.
In theory HD radio should sound better than FM. I've also noticed that quality varies noticeably between different FM stations. Luckily the crappy sounding stations are the ones I don't listen to anyway.
