2010 New Saab 9-5

Since splitting from GM, Saab has promised to take a new, more Scandinavian direction and the new 2010 Saab 9-5 is the first step. With an all-turbocharged powertrain and beefy styling, this is one spicy meatball.

Given their ownership by the company-that-shall-not-be-pronounced (Koenigsegg), it was expected that we'd see something exciting out of the brand and this is certainly different ? even if a lot of this was designed and prepared under GM's supervision.

Engine choices are diverse, including a 1.6-liter gas turbo good for 180 HP all the way up to a 2.8 turbo V6 putting out 300 HP with a 2.0-liter fourbanger turbo with 220 HP. If you're more into bioethanol there's also an E85 variant of the 2.0-liter engine and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel. All transmissions will be six-speed with the option of a good old self-shift or a manumatic.

On the inside, the new Saab is getting a redesigned console that wraps around the driver and includes a heads-up-display and an aviation-themed altimeter (speedo). If you liked the Saab Aero-X concept, you'll probably like this latest 9-5.

******************************************************************************
This looks like daily driver material to me, the cabin looks pretty comfy, HUD, 6spd, 300hp of turbo goodness.

Never thought I'd say this about a Saab, but I think this car is pretty damn handsome.

looks pretty generic to me, minus the back, which looks like any other saab.

but maybe i'm biased, i can't think of anything saab has ever made that wasn't ass-ugly.

I like.

My g/f is obsessed with saab's, too bad i haven't heard hardly anything good about their reliability, EVER.

the interior's are whack on some of the older models. but i guess they are different lol

The interior looks better... but it still seems like they are behind the times on interior design.

I wonder how much torque that 2.0 turbo engine will make, and how much the car will weigh. Even with the 300hp turbo 6, if it weighs in at two tons then what's the point?

They are much better then the use to be, esp pre-GM. But even then it is still a european car. So once its out of warranty, get the check book out.

I think I've seen the wrap-around glass concept Saab at a car show two or three years ago, and the back looks a bit like an Aston-Martin. for a HUD.

I'll take the turbo 4 with 220 HP and the AWD.

I have always liked Volvos and to a lesser extent, Saabs, but reliability is the biggest thing keeping me from taking them seriously. I mean, I can have a new Subaru Legacy for less and it would be WAY more reliable.

Just for the hell of it, how I would rank the major car brands sold in the USA, from the "cheapest" to the "most luxurious".

You have Lotus ranked "more luxurious" then Infiniti?

2011 9-3 is supposed to be getting the redesigned dash from the 9-5 as the next gen 9-3 will not be coming to market until 2013 as a 2014 model.

2010 9-3 has had the 2.8L V6 Turbo engine removed as well. Only option will be a 2.0 4cyl Turbo engine. Rumors have the engine producing 210HP in base trim and 240HP in Aero trim.

The 2.8L V6 Turbo when rated at 250HP has 258/TQ. If you chip/tune this engine HP goes to 280HP and 300TQ. TQ is not an issue!

Well considering he put Ferrari above Maybach and Bentley he is obviously rating them based on something other than "luxury".

Name recognition maybe.

Am I the only one that thinks the exterior looks like it is trying to morph into a Hyundai Sonata?

Um...this is 1000000% GM...Koenigsegg has not even taken ownership of the company yet to my knowledge. This car was fully developed by GM-Owned-Saab.

I think it is a nice piece of work (style is slowly growing on me)...but we need to give credit where credit is due...and the credit definitely falls on GM for this product.

What is this car? A car takes years to engineer, no way GM has cranked out a new one. I presume this is just a rebadged something or other, right?

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic.

Built on the Epsilon II platform. Same platform as used by the 2010 LaCrosse. Rebadged - Not at all.

Agreed...it shares a lot of parts with other cars (platform, engines), but it is not just another car with a new set of sheet metal.

This is also the most expensive car riding on an Epsilon 2 platform correct? The new LaCrosse is close...but I'm assuming there is a good 15K difference in starting prices.

So really it's a Buick Lacrosse. Or a buick lacrosse is a saab, each having some differences with the other but probably similar powertrain, suspension, chassis, etc.?

Why would I be? Saab has been a joke for a few years now, just rebadged Subarus.

Maybe it was just a couple of rebadged ones. See how important it is not to rebadge? People like me will hate you for it 😉 Talk to you, VW!
