From 1-9-07 (the date the iPhone was anounced) to 1-27-10 is almost exactly 3 years. It's 3.05 years, actually...

I don't understand this though, why would the exclusive contract begin from announcement? Wouldn't it make more sense to be from actual delivery date of a product, and thus June 2010 would mark 3yrs?

Though, it would be quite interesting if Apple went ahead and said "yup, our deal is up in June, we're going to add tmobile and verizon (and sprint, heh....)"

Well, the argument could be made that Apple & ATT inked the contract days before the initial announcement.

Dunno, it's definitely an interesting rumor...

It's at least a 5 year contract.

Did a bit of research too, have heard of a 5 year contract with ATT, taking into account the 30 months of R&D prior to the iPhone's announcement in Jan of 07' it's 5 years in June of 2010.

"Development of the iPhone began with Apple CEO Steve Jobs' direction that Apple engineers investigate touchscreens.[25] Apple created the device during a secretive and unprecedented collaboration with AT&T Mobility—Cingular Wireless at the time—at an estimated development cost of US$150 million over thirty months. Apple rejected the "design by committee" approach that had yielded the Motorola ROKR E1, a largely unsuccessful collaboration with Motorola. Instead, Cingular gave Apple the liberty to develop the iPhone's hardware and software in-house.[26][27]"

I don't think so. AT&T will fight to keep it and I think they will concede to whatever Apple wants. AT&T with the iPhone and the bad network issues is better than not having the iPhone. They will do whatever it takes to keep the iPhone.

And what does Apple want? To sell a lot more phones. Can't see how AT&T can even begin to give Apple what they want.

AT&T already did give Apple what they wanted by giving them the ok to sell the iPhone on their network. As Verizon told Apple to take a hike, the agreement between AT&T and Apple has worked out for both parties. As that agreement was said to have been renewed last year, I'd be shocked that AT&T would have agreed to just a year.

Without the iPhone, AT&T has nothing. With the iPhone available on other carriers, there will be a mass exodus of people away from AT&T, particularly as contracts expire.

Basically returning the market balance between AT&T and VZW back to the pre-iPhone days. I probably won't switch because I can't get VZW signals in my cube at work.

We are talking now, not then. Now AT&T has nothing new to bring to the table.

Is AT&T the largest mobile provider in the United States? THe multiple carrier stuff that is happening outside the US is because they are GSM providers. There is only a GSM iPhone.

Apple is not going to make a CDMA exclusive phone because it is already starting to be phased out. If they unlock the iPhone or allow it to be sold by other carriers, the only carriers here that support the iPhone is TMobile and their network isn't that great. So I don't see why Apple would make a CDMA phone. They may open it up but only to Tmobile. However, AT&T has to be doing whatever Apple wants to keep the exclusivity. The first thing they need to do is boost network reliability and speeds.

So much AT&T hate...I've had my iphone with AT&T for about a year, works phenomenal. I've had T-Mobile, 5 years previous, and 1 year with an iphone on T-Mobile, which also worked amazing.

I would not mind seeing the iphone go to every carrier, but I doubt it will happen, since the contract is most likely 5 years with AT&T.

Same here, I have never had issues with AT&T in all the time I have been with them.

As always, it depends on your location. When I had my iPhone (I've owned every version too), I didn't really have may problems with AT&T's service. I did get bored with the iPhone though and since AT&T really didn't offer much else in terms of smartphones, I went to Verizon.

This validates the tablet rumor.

Verizon is now the largest carrier in the US.

I'm with you 100% The only way I see an Apple phone coming to Verizon before the end of 2010 is if LTE is ready by then. Even then, Verizon has said that there will be no phones at first, only data plugs. Of course, that could all be a load of crap since they said we would see LTE last year.

that is because you have a better 3G coverage and ATT put a better 3G coverage where Apple headquarter is at

lol i can actually vouch for that. my cousins live 5-10 minutes away from apples headquarters in cupertino, and i never ONCE had anything less than 5 bars of signal, along with zero dropped calls.

lol at&t would be eaten alive if they had problems at cupertino...
