200FSB vs 266FSB

My current board is a Abit KT7-Raid. I know it doesn't take 266FSB AMD chips, but I notice that sometimes the 266FSB chips are cheaper than the 200FSB of the same speed. So can I buy the cheaper one and make it work? thanks

The only difference is the default multiplier. Eg

10 x 100Mhz bus = 1000Mhz or
7.5 x 133Mhz bus = 1000Mhz

(the bus speed is "doubled up" that is why the chips are known as 200 or 266 bus).

If you have a multiplier unlocked chip you could turn one into the other. Otherwise, if you put a 1Ghz 266 Athlon into your board it would boot at 7.5 x 100 = 750Mhz. You would have to change the multiplier to 10x to boot at 1000Mhz.

Hope this helps.

my limited knowledge makes me sad

The answer is yes...

You can use a 266 chip in a 200 Mobo. I have done it..... Actually with a good mobo you can OC the chip much easier then the 200 CPU

Hi MCS, so you mean the default would be 7.5 x 100 = 750Mhz? So do I have to unlock anything manually? Or do I just go into BIOS and change the multiplier and thats it? Please let me know more MCS, thanks.

Since I'm in the same situation. The 266 is cheaper than 200 so I wanted to get the 266 so I could use that when I get a newer board later on.

Depends on the CPU u r getting. 1.2 Ghz & below. U'll have to physically unlock the CPU (close those L1 bridges) w/ the pencil trick. Some 1.2 Ghz is unlocked...so u can change the multiplier in the bios direct.

Yes that's right - only when you set the FSB to 133 will you end up with 1000Mhz. As Wind said, some chips come with an unlocked multiplier from the factory, in which case you would just need to change the multiplier to 10x. If not, it's no problem, you can unlock the multiplier with a pencil and a steady hand. There is of course no way of knowing this until you get the chip. Either way, you will be able to run at 10x100 no problem.
