CHERRY HILL, NJ ? One year after releasing its redesigned WRX, Subaru is adding more performance to the cult car. The WRX's existing 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be bumped to 265 horsepower and 244 pound-feet of torque ? a 41 hp and 18 lb-ft bump from the current car. A five-speed manual will be the only transmission option for 2009.

Stiffer spring rates, larger antiroll bars, retuned dampers and upper strut mounts from the STI will accompany the additional power. Lower-profile 225/45R17 summer tires replace the current car's 205/50 rubber to aid the attitude adjustment.

Minor styling tweaks will help distinguish 2009 model WRXs. The Aero package ? previously an option ? is now standard on both sedan and five-door models as is a new STI-type grille. The five-door also gets the STI's rear spoiler and diffuser.

The new-for-2009 Impreza GT model will retain the current WRX's 224-hp engine and be available exclusively with a four-speed automatic transmission.

What this means to you: Subaru has heard the cries from its loyalists and is returning the WRX to its proper station as a performance car. ? Josh Jacquot, Senior Road Test Editor.

I'm glad, though I fear it may be too late. Subaru has really screwed the pooch here with the new model, these should have been in the car in the first place.

I'm hoping that this means there will be changes to the STi as well to tamp down the understeer, the body roll, and add some more power, without a price increase.

Given the new specs of the WRX, I think Subaru will have a harder time selling STi's for ~13K more without some additional changes.

For some reason something still irks me about the sedan.. looks so generic now (non WRX/STI version does)

I agree they'll have a harder time selling the STi.. I know I wouldn't be looking at one with all the changes in the WRX.

Yeah, the changes are things that should've come last year when the new model made its debut.
The new WRX is only a manual - as it should be; the Impreza GT (old WRX) is only an auto.
They really should update it to a 6speed manual and a 5speed auto.

Alas, Subaru was trying to go too mainstream in order to appeal to the masses.
The good thing is that they listened to all the complaints and are trying to correct their ways/errors.

I think a lot of 08 owners are probably a bit peeved now though.
I don't think the STi will see any changes for 09, but hopefully/probably in 2010.

I actually prefer the look of the sedan over the hatch. That aero kit adds a bit, but I would have to get some better pictures to make a final judgment.

I too would prefer a 6spd across the board, I thought that was going to be the plan, maybe next year. Before they came out some Subaru exec said something about how they wanted a 6speed in the WRX but didn't have the excess manufacturing capacity.

My little brother got an Impreza on Tuesday. It's not bad, but I wish that the auto was a 5-speed.

Subaru is scared of the Lancer Ralliart, hence the extra performance on 2009 models. I personally will take the Ralliart over the WRX any day. More aggressive styling, same AWD system as the Evolution, what's not to like.

Hopefully, Subaru will learn from their mistakes. I still prefer last generation's Impreza over the current generation. However, if you look at it a couple of times, you start to think that the new design isn't actually that bad.

You're probably right. The Ralliart is quite a nice option.. AWD from the IX, transmission from the X MR minus a few modes.

I think it's an acquired taste. It certainly does not look good on the internet pics - but in person it's not that bad.
The Mitsu Lancer and EVO certainly look much better and more aggressive than the Impreza/WRX.

While I like the "hawk eye" of the 06/07 better, I do think that interior of the new ones are much improved. Too bad we can't pick and choose.

It's amazing how changing the grille and a few other things makes such a difference. Adding the STi style wing on the sedan definitely helps. I, for one, really like hatchbacks so I welcome the new style even though it sort of mimics the Mazda look.

It's sad that they still have updated these older transmissions... I mean c'mon! The Nissan Versa has a 6speed manual~!

Subaru manuals.....suck to put it mildly. I would rather have the 5speed from an Accord than what I have in my 06.

The STi 6 speed really isn't any better, you need to make slow deliberate shifts or your gonna get bucked or miss a gear.

I had to train myself to shift slower after moving over from my Integra GSR.

Anyways, I give the thumbs down to Mitsu for only offering a 5 speed in the GSR EVO. So what if it's stronger than the Evo IX 6 speed, there's a remedy for that, make the 6 speed stronger.

Buzzing at 4K RPM's at highway speed is just annoying and bad for gas mileage.

I've been looking a the WRX and wouldn't consider buying one until the engine was beefed up a bit, AND a 6 speed manual. I'm glad they upped the engine, but a 6 speed should be standard, and auto should definitely be a 5 speed. I like the new design and prefer the hatch back. Hopefully they'll install a 6speed manual transmission with 2010 and make the car what it should have been for the 2008 debut.

WTF is going with the 4EAT... why dont they bring on over the 5EAT that they had with the 2.5 GT legacy/outback models.

Well obviously they are probably doing this because of the new lancer but I can tell you the lancer is going to be noticeably slower because of all the heft it has. The new lancer/evo is just too heavy as the lancer will be. The new evo does mid to high 13's. Imagine the lancer? mid to high 14's???

Nice, I like how the 2009 design throws out the 2008 hatchback design and puts back the classy racy look.

Tbh, I find the WRX far more impressive looking than the 2009 Lancer.

It's still ugly. Why the hell can't Subaru make a decent looking WRX?
