When will VW learn that they can't sell more cars in the USA by going up market?

What they need is to keep what they got, make it reliable, and maybe add more diesel engines to the mix, and they'll have success here.

Well I found some rumor saying 35k or less, so I dunno if you can really compare it to the 70k Phaeton

Have you paid attention to the car market in the last 10-15 years? A Civic can cost you 20k right now with certain options. Hyundai has a 30k Sedan & SUV(s). A Toyota Minivan can be optioned out for over 40k. Subaru makes a 35k station wagon and a 40k SUV. A Camry and an Accord can be optioned out for close to 30k.

People bought A LOT of B5 & B5.5 GLX Passats in the 30k range with all bells & whistles and 4 Motion. And that was 3-8 years ago. No reason to think that with the right performance, standard content, and styling they won't move some of these at $35k.

It'll have similar features and equal if not better performance than most luxury brands entry car, but it will be a half size if not full size bigger. It just won't move in volumes like the Lexus ES or the G35. But the same could be said for any VW model. They just aren't volume sellers.

a VW with 300 horses... expect it to be a little more expensive than the G35/TL/ES, starting at $35k or so?
