Printer support kills it for all but the geek/enthusiast imo can't see Joe the plumber ordering a 400$ dell with Ubuntu and a 500$ printer because there are no drivers for the 50$ one.

As a noob I had no problems installing on a Dell 400sc, no drivers to mess with, love the default skin (I hate shiny shit with a passion, aka Vista), installs and updates fast.
Had a minor problem enabling dual monitors, had to install ATI's driver but have to turn off desktop effects to watch movies.
I had sound with the default audio player but never could get sound with any of the video players or Mythbuntu.
And lastly in Mythbuntu with my TV tuner card I ended up with a split screen of two identical squashed pictures, after a little googling seems this might not be fixable and is indicative of overall poor ati support.

This was all in a 12 hour Ubuntu/Mythbuntu marathon a couple days ago, I installed windows last night so I could watch a dvd but may try again tomorrow.
Anyway thats my first impression of Linux.

I had no problem using my Canon MP160 (a cheap-o printer/scanner/copier) I bought a few years ago under Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10.

The desktop effects problem is a known issue with ATI and Intel drivers in how they handle OpenGL (which is what the desktop effects use).

It's easy to enable DVD-css support in Ubuntu. It's just a matter of installing the appropriate package - <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs">https://help.ubuntu.com/com......ormats/PlayingDVDs</a>
