We were quite excited early last week to take delivery of a 2010 Buick Lacrosse. After all, when was the last time we've seen a truly new mid-size Buick? (Answer: 1988)

Buick hopes the LaCrosse will continue the success it has enjoyed with the Enclave crossover and establish the brand among younger, more affluent shoppers. With a base price ranging from about $27,000 to $34,000 and a choice of three engines (a four-cylinder and two V-6s), the LaCrosse, Buick says, will compete with everything from Chrysler 300s to the Lexus ES.

But as we perused the $39,325 sticker of our well-equipped CXS model, we couldn't help but think of our Four Seasons Hyundai Genesis 4.6, which has a similar price and a similar mission. Like Buick, Hyundai hopes to grab the attention of buyers who have historically snorted derisively at the idea of driving one of its cars. And although the two may differ in packaging - the LaCrosse relies on front/all-wheel drive and a direct-injection V-6 while the Genesis goes with rear-wheel drive and a V-8 - both come packed with technology and refinement in hopes of enticing near-luxury buyers.

We spent the better part of an afternoon driving - and being driven - through the finer parts of Ann Arbor to determine which of these sedans stands a better chance of capturing a slice of the luxury pie. Read on for our thoughts.

overall, they all were liked, a lot... and both offer a substantial alternative to Lexus and BMW...

Anyone else sort of smiling at the fact that Buick, of all companies, is competing with FWD 4 and 6-cylinder vehicles, against a Korean import with a RWD 4.6L V8? Just seems odd. TBH, both the Lacrosse and Genesis seem like pretty nice vehicles to me.

I was thinking today "I should buy one of those"....it was the LaCrosse.
I was always of fan of the 2dr Buick Regals....even the 98+ 4dr ones in black. This is a good progression of that body style. (with the exception of the older lacross....that's so wrong)

I can think of a number of cars I'd buy at that price before I'd ever consider a Buick. And a Hyundai? No fucking way.

Sorry, but that's a fact.

I don't own either car, but why would you not buy a Buick? Buick's reliability beats Lexus and they're supposed to be decent cars. Why be a badge hater and not like a car for the fact that it's a good car, not who makes it?

Buick is supposed to be pretty good looking at recent reliability results. But I agree 100 % with the Hyundai part, complete garbage cars, I'd never buy one for the life of me and don't get how people do when there are so many other options to choose from.

Nothing wrong with it, I'd just buy other cars in that price range that's all.

Lacrosse sure is a looker and the Hyundai has amazing value for the $.

Another great car that competes in this price range is the 2010 Taurus SHO.

If I had to spend $40K on a premium full size sedan the SHO, G8 GXP, and Genesis would be tops on my list.

I don't believe in those ratings that much, the Lexus is a tank car :)
