2008 SSD into 2012 macbook w/o migration?

I just bought a 2012 MacBook pro off of ebay. I have a 2008 that I upgraded to an SSD. Could I just put my SSD into the new laptop if I upgrade to Yosemite? I know that I could migrate but then I would have to go through the trouble of re registering my software and stuff, which could be a headache finding registration codes. Or does migration take care of that?
