...the LHC might just turn out to be the world's first time machine.

...That's because travelling into the past is only possible - if it is possible at all - as far back as the creation of the first time machine, and that means 2008 could become Year Zero: a must-see for the ...

Isn't there also an outside chance that the LHC could destroy the planet?

Yeah, there's also an outside chance that an asteroid will hit earth later this year.

There are theories that mini-black holes appear all the time, they just don't last long enough to do anything. Such will be the case with the LHC if it manages to create them IMHO.

It has been foreseen... December 21st, 2012.

I thought strangelets were more a concern in a collider of this power than mini-black holes.

"Large Hadron Collider collider"?

Is that like "Built on New Technology technology" in Win2k, or "Universal Product Code code" or "Personal Identification Number number" or "Liquid Crystal Display display"?

They actually just crash two of those gizmos into each other mythbuster's style. Nothing says science like giant explosions! :D

Thats interesting... So technically, if it works, the moment they switch the thing on, someone from 2527 could step out of there? :Q Heck, even worse... Since 2008 would be historically known as the year in which the time machine was invented, a huge number of people would want to visit our time, which means instead of just one person from 2527, theoretically the whole thing would fill with people from random timelines

Ill stop daydreaming now

If there was a button that when pressed it would make a strangelet, I would press it 5 times. A day.

people?

im thinking giant cockroaches that survive after we have killed ourselves off in the future, maybe intergalactic overloards that appeared and conquered the earth...maybe zombies or mutants...

Interesting, so the "time machine" is really created if and only if it creates a wormhole at some point during its operation. If it does, then if there's someone on the other end with the capability of traversing a wormhole, they might instantly appear when that wormhole is created.

You wouldn't see them if they did "appear," considering the size of such wormholes. Theoretically it would be a nano-machine, if capable of replication it might be able to build itself into something that can communicate with us within days or months, who knows. It's a one way trip unless the LHC creates more than one wormhole that happens to connect with the same point in space-time (unlikely). Don't expect time tourists any time soon.
