Nintendo tops video game sales in 2007
Success of Wii and ?Halo 3? drive record $17.94-billion year

NEW YORK - Fueled by the success of Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's "Halo 3," more video games were sold in the U.S. in 2007 than in any other year, with retail sales hitting $17.94 billion, according to the NPD Group.

The market researcher said total video game sales grew 43 percent, up from $12.53 billion in 2006. In December, historically the industry's strongest month, Americans spent $4.82 billion on video games, up 28 percent from a year earlier and up 83 percent from $2.63 billion in November.

Video games sold well during the holidays even as jittery consumers were cutting back spending on clothes and other items.

Hardware sales jumped 54 percent to $7.04 billion in 2007, while software sales climbed 34 percent to $8.64 billion. In December, hardware sales rose 17 percent to $1.83 billion, and software sales grew 36 percent to $2.37 billion.

"I think the industry has become much more generally accepted as a mainstream form of entertainment over the last couple of years, and that sets it up well for future expansion," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in an e-mail.

Much of this growing acceptance has been attributed to the Wii, groundbreaking when it launched in 2006 for its motion-sensitive controller that lets players mimic movements for bowling, tennis or sword-fighting.

Even so, the portable Nintendo DS was by far the year's best-selling gaming system with 8.5 million units sold, 2.5 million of them in December. In short supply all year, the Wii still sold 6.3 million units, 1.4 million of them last month.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said the company expects to sell more Wiis this year than it did in 2007. To deal with the high demand, Nintendo raised Wii production twice since last April, the last time to 1.8 million units a month. Though the consoles are still selling out soon after they hit store shelves, Nintendo has not said it plans to boost production again.

The year's best-selling game was Microsoft Corp.'s blockbuster first-person shooter "Halo 3," which helped sell 4.6 million Xbox 360s in 2007, about 1.3 million of them in December.

Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said there have been shortages of the Xbox 360 at retailers across the U.S. The company, he added, is working on getting the consoles back on store shelves "as soon as possible."

Sony's PlayStation 3 was the only gaming system that didn't sell more than a million units in December. Nonetheless, sales have jumped since Sony slashed the console's price by $100 and launched a low-end model last fall. There were 797,600 PS3s sold during the month, and 2.6 million in 2007.

Frazier said Activision Inc.'s "Guitar Hero" games remain the industry's best-selling franchise. People spent more than $820 million on "Guitar Hero" games for various consoles in 2007.

Dennis and Fils-Aime said the U.S. economic slowdown had not hurt video games, as the industry has generally been insulated from broader downturns.

"Gaming is about having fun, spending time with friends ? you want to do it whether the economy is good or bad," Dennis said.

In general, it's been one hell of a year for gamers no matter which platform is your favorite, but the success of the Wii just really impresses me. I really do agree with Nintendo's business theories about being successful in the gaming industry. A lot of people continue to claim that the Wii's success will slow down a lot once the market gets over the novelty factor and that still might happen eventually (who knows?), but it simply just hasn't happened yet.

I'm kind of surprised PS2 GH3 was the 3rd best selling game for December...it's sad that the PS2 is killing the PS3 in terms of sales. Sony needs to axe development for the PS2 and hope it drives consumers to buy more PS3's, although I guess when it's bringing in a good source of revenue (and probably profit at this point) why nuke it. Sad when people would prefer a 6 year old system to the latest and greatest POS put out by Sony.

I'm more surprised that there are no PS3 titles in the number Purbeast posted. I figured there would have been at least one...

No PS3 titles and the PS3 sold disappointingly during the holidays as well. Even with the new $400 version. If it weren't for the PS2 and PSP, Sony would be really hurting.

Library is pretty sweet. Their reliability is an issue though. So far Sony has gotten money from me for 3 PS2s over the years. :(

i wouldn't call it poor at all.

it accounted for 31% of the yearly sales of the PS3.

the xbox360 sold 27% of it's yearly sales in December, and the wii sold 21% of it's yearly sales in december.

Those numbers are nice to look at but the real numbers to consider are the number of dollars each system and it's games and accessories totaled annually. If anything, those numbers should show Sony that they need find ways to improve sales throughout the year more although I wouldn't let that make me heavily concerned if I were them. I would be much more concerned about those annual dollars that they pulled in and heavily consider what they plan to do about it for 08 which I am sure they have already done. We'll just see if whatever they come up with works.

i know this, i'm simply saying the ps3 did not sell that poor over the holiday season.

Given how poorly the PS3 sold in comparison throughout the year, that isn't saying much though. The number of PS3s sold is improving but there hasn't been the marked jump in the North American market that many were predicting for the PS3.

I expect things to be better in 2008 because of the price drop and better games but they still have a ways to go to catch up with the 360 and Wii in North America.

I'm just really looking forward to the GDC in February. That will give us the first real glimpse into the upcoming games for 2008.

They did well enough I think. I guess it depends on each person's view on what justifies "doing well" over the holidays. Some people look at the raw numbers. Others compare those numbers with the competition. Some do both.

I try to look at both and also consider long term as much as possible which is very hard to do. Those numbers are not bad as long as they continue to sell PS3's slowly and steadily over the years. If that system's life cycle is as good as the PS2's life cycle then they could still be considered the winner over time. Personally, I do not believe this will happen but who knows?

There simply arent enough PS3s out in circulation compared to DS, 360, Wii, PS2 for it to get software into the top 10, unless it has some mega blockbuster exclusive title.
