"The SE-R model offers fun-to-drive performance and aggressive, sporty appearance to those who want the convenience of an automatic transmission. The Sentra SE-R, equipped exclusively with Nissan?s Xtronic CVT? (Continuously Variable Transmission), is a unique offering in the sport compact market."

so if you buy the base SE-R, apparently you can only get a CVT

ok so no manual transmission in their "performance" sentra.....not good, and it's not even 200hp only 177hp but the weight of this thing is going to kill it if the stock sentra weighs 2800 lbs and it says it uses the same suspension as the stock sentra? there goes it handling awesome, and it's god awful ugly too. like said above, civic si sedan is a better bang for the buck but the mazdaspeed 3 is even better

It's not bad. I love my '02 SE-R but I doubt I'll be getting another. I'd love an Altima SE-R or the new Altima Coupe.

SpecV gets the 6 speed manual.
SE-R gets CVT only.

Great...so now we'll be seeing Spec V stickers and emblems on all sorts of econo-boxes sporting fart cans and ridiculous wings.

Spec Vee!!!

Yea to bad it still carries over that piece of garbage engine. High revs + High stroke length = Kaboom. Thats why the redline is so low at 6500. Thats a truck motor developed for torque, hence the bore to stroke ratio being so low. Does it still have the solid rear axle in the back? I would rather buy a performance car with a motor designed for hauling ass, not hauling vegeatables to the market.

EDIT: I do find the car attractive though, and I appricate it's rather subdued appearance

and holy cow, a NA 200hp four banger? nicely done Nissan. but:

blah, blah, blah and 8-counterweight crankshaft to achieve a higher redline limit of 6,800 rpm.

my 7 year old civic can do that.

your civic didn't have a 2.5L engine. Much easier to get high revs with a smaller engine.

I didn't think it was bad looking...till I saw the profile shot.

My sentiments agree that the Civic Si Sedan > this.

The engine bore/stroke wise is not really much different from similar modern honda/toyo 2.4L motors, they all have undersquare, long stroke designs. Honda's is pretty successful with their design in particular with the TSX, which is basically a factory stroker RSX-S motor. Stock redline is 7500 rpms, but the aftermarket seems to be able to safely rev the stock longblock to 8000+ rpms with just a retuned ecu.

I think it's actually a decent setup for most common cars, it makes good torque as mentioned, and there is good midrange power. Peak power is largely limited by how well the heads/manifolds flow, since a undersquare setup has low valve area relative to displacement. The other limiting factor as mentioned is the revs, since pistons speeds are higher for long strokes.

That non independent rear beam suspension though is a slap in the face to any half serious enthusiast.
