2007 Mazda 3 without reverse lockout

Does anybody know if its normal for a 2007 Mazda 3 to be able to switch into reverse while rolling forward? I had to make a sudden stop and when I reached over to stop stuff from flying off my passenger seat I must have whacked the shifter and it went into reverse. I thought it would have stopped at Neutral but it didnt.
