Friend took her car (above) into the shop for her 100k maintenance. Mech told her she had a damaged transfer case and was looking at a $2100 repair job. Said it was leaking fluid beforehand but didn't pay any mind.

Without having all the details handy, does that sound like a reasonable ballpark? I figured that was in the 'total rebuild' range, wanted to give her some idea if she was getting screwed or not. Thanks in advance

Edit - Phuch, if you happen to see this. She works out in Brentwood, would be happy to give you her # if you thought you could narrow it down a bit

You mean she knew it was leaking fluid and didn't do anything about it? Meaning she likely ran it without fluid?

That is, you are pretty sure the transfer case is toast?

I personally am just getting secondhand information, really. She said she noticed it was leaking but thought it was oil. Then said her mechanic said the transfer case was shot. I have neither the wherewithal nor skills to look at it. Just told her I'd ask on her for a general opinion.

That said, it sounds like your summation is mostly accurate.

There's not really a transfer case on those. It's a FWD car with a PTO, I believe. Basically just a ring and pinion that drives the rear prop shaft...

...actually, no...Google is my friend sometimes, I forget...

Ford apparently calls it a 'PTU,' and it is actually a lot like a RWD transfer case. I remember doing the output shaft seal (for one of the front axles) on a couple of those...it's a PITA...there's a service bulletin for it...but it's not a death sentence for the unit unless it has already totally run dry. If that's the same design I'm thinking of, it's the passenger side seal that eats itself and it leaks ATF. The actual 'transfer case' part of it is full of gear oil.

TBQH I'd have to look up some documentation, because I only have a vague recollection of the issue with these. I would assume the ATF that's leaking is the same stuff that circulates through the rest of the trans...so if low fluid toasts something, it's going to be the trans itself, not the PTU. I think there's a tube that goes through the PTU and the fluid is basically coming out of the final drive of the trans...maybe it contaminates the gear oil on its way out?

What shop looked at it?

Independent shop + used part. What's a 100K mile edge worth anyway?

We got rid of my wife's 07 Edge because of a failed PTU. It had a weird issue where it would vibrate under acceleration, such as passing someone or merging on to the interstate. We took it in and they said the PTU would need to be replaced. Apparently this is a weak point for these things.

If I am not mistaken $2100 was around what the dealership was going to charge us to replace it, at their cost. Her mother is the HR director at the dealership and we get dealer service at cost. Even at cost, I wouldn't pay the dealership cost... still too much!

We bought ourselves out of the car loan and bought a used Tahoe outright as a replacement.
